Leather belt won't track

I am using a 1x42 leather belt on a 2x42 craftsman it is a nightmare. First I ordered a few new belts. I got a 36grit for rough profiling and it was too thick to fit under the guard, same with the leather belt. So I had to cut a part of the guard off to make everything fit right. Now everything fits and works great, except I can't get the leather belt to track for the life of me..... It seems to be a little bit too big, not that tight on the wheels, and I can almost get it to track, but with the slightest pressure applied it goes crazy and flies off. Is there a way to shrink it a little maybe? Any tips? Thank you
Joe

How about a sleeve on your tensioner? If you can't find something that fits good try a redneck fix and wrap layers of duct tape around the tensioner to build it up.

Hmmmm that is an idea, I don't want to use duct tape though :) I will try and find something else that fits good, thank you for the quick response.

What I do when mine get too stretched out is just to cut them and make a new splice, slightly shorter this time. I use shoe goo. Take your time skiving the ends of the splice or the bump will drive you crazy.

+100 on the masking tape. I tried it just to see how it held up. 2 layers on the drive wheel, still works great after several blades.

I think I might need to use a LOT of masking tape to make the diameter of the wheel big enough for this belt. I will give it a try though thank you, I would try and splice the belt but I am 99% sure I would screw it up.

Sadly the tape did not work.. I also tried a coozie(sp?) for soda or beer cans around the wheel and it looked promising, but the belt is still too big, I guess I am going to have to try and cut and splice it, any tips? I've never done it before.
