Leather care question

I recently inherited a black leather briefcase. Unfortunately, the leather handle has a gummy residue which comes off on my hand. Any ideas on how best to take care of this problem (other than taping over the handle)? Thanks in advance.

Try cleaning it thoroughly with denatured alcohol, then oiling with balistol or mink oil.
