Hey guys and gals. I've purchased a few used knives which did not have sheaths, and thought I would like to try making my own. These would be for both fixed blade and folding knives. I've found info on making belts, wallets etc. but not specifically on knife sheaths. I'm interested not so much in the primative style sheaths, but more so those with decorative carving, and stitching. I would like to get a book on getting started in this craft, what kind of tools needed, techniques etc. Can anyone suggest a good book on this? Thanks in advance.

I would suggest going to a Tandy Leather Factory. They have tons of books on the subject and have been very helpful to me. If I knew where you were located, I could tell you where the closest store to you is. They have all kinds of leather, stains, glue, tools, etc. They have everything you'll need to get started and will be able to give you a few informal lessons to get you started. I was lucky when I made my first visit, as another knifemaker was there buying leather. He basically handcut a sheath for a knife he had on his belt at the time, showing me exactly how he does it.

It's actually not difficult to do. Expect to spend about $100 on tools, leather and books to get you started. Once you're started, you'll earn your investment back rather quickly. A custom ordered sheath runs from $40 and up each. For your $100 initial investment, you'll have enough leather and supplies to produce about 5 sheaths.

Good luck!
