I have a question for the leather guy's out there. I have been buying tooling leather from a local shop for sheaths and of course the good side is polished,
but when I dye the leather with alcohol based dyes they are going really
blotchy. Should I be etching or neutralizing the leather before dye ?

Wayne, there are a couple of things to do before dyeing.Wipe the sheath down with Denatured Alcohol or Acetone. That will deglaze it, then right before dyeing dampen the sheath completely and wait until the "wet" look disappears then start dyeing. When the leather is damp it opens the pores and it will accept dye better. When it is completely dry wipe it down vigorously with a soft towel, then apply your finish such as Tan-kote or Leather Sheen.Another tip is to use Oxallic Acid (Wood Bleach) and water mixture to remove fingerprints and stains from the leather. Hope this helps.Dave:)

I have that same problem when dyeing with a light tan color...sort of the color you see on Bianchi Gun Holsters....droves me crazy
