I'm looking for a little advice on what weight or kind of leather to make some knife sheaths. This will be my first attempt and right now I would like to make one for my Mora, my modified Old Hickory Butcher, and my Crewman. I hope to get good enough to make one for my Khukuri with a piggback for my Helle Odel. Also, can anyone recommend some inexpensive sources for good leather? Any hints or suggestions?

Triquetra, 7-8oz is all you need for small to medium sized fixed blades or even folders. If you're making one for a large kukhri or 8" Kabar, for example, you might step up to 8-9oz. Either way, you can use the same thickness of the welt.

I get my leather from Tandy, but only because there's a Tandy store less than an hour from me. I can go there and pick out pieces small enough (approx. 9 to 12 sq ft) for me to afford. Online, that's a little harder, but it can be done.

All of these are 7-8oz.:

Check the Sheaths and Stuff forum. There's some good stickied threads there.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I guess I'll check this forum out. I didn't even know that it was here. I spend most of my time here and still check out the HI and Tomahawk forum every day to see what's interesting. I hope that I have something worth posting pics of when I'm done.

if you got a hobby lobby around you, they sell 5lbs bags of assorted scrap leather for $6. that is what i use for my amiture sheaths.
