Leather for Pouches

I've seen some need little pouches for organizing gear such as fire kits. What type of leather is used for simple drawstring pouches. I have made several sheaths and have all tooling leather though some of it is very thin and unusable for sheaths. I wonder if that can be softened?

For a draw string bag type pouch, I would use deer skin. Or if your frugal, try a thin oil tanned leather, they stay nice and soft. If you have a Tandy near you, look in the bargain bin.

Try the "oily utility" that Tandy sells. The black stuff is pretty good and it comes in different colors and thicknesses.
