Leather haft wrap?

Next hawk i get I want to do a handle wrap with a solid piece of leather, kind of like on traditional bows.

The way I see it being done in my head:

Measure circumference of the haft, cut leather maybe a bit shorter than the circumference, sew the ends together then wet it and fit it on the haft....would that work?

I have seen pictures(I think on here) but I can't be sure. Anyone have some pics?

Edit: Similar to this (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=444457), but further down the haft, where you normally grip it and most likely sewn with artificial sinew instead of laced.

I have done this. Did just like you said except I sewed it onto the item while it was wet and let it dry in place. Worked great. Dried really firm and tight. Used artificial sinew.

I've done it a few times and it's not too hard. Looks nice when it's done right. I'll try to post a pic later of one that I did with rawhide and sinew.
