Hello sir. I just obtained this knife through a sale in bladeforums. I love this knife very much and would like to carry it while hunting. My concern is how does the leather hold up if blood or guts get on the leather after field dressing game? Will it start to smell? I figured I will wash it with saddle soap but wasn’t sure if that will kill any bacteria. I also will wax it. This is my first leather handle knife and I absolutely love how it feels I just want to keep it in good condition for years to come.

Hi, to be honnest I´m not a hunter so I don´t know if it start to smell but I guess if you will nicely clean it soon after work it should be ok. I use only clean bees wax from my father to impregnate the handle and it is done very deeply so I don´t expect the dirt could come inside the leather. Saddle soap and some high quallity wax after some longer time will be ok according my experience ;-)

Leather can be permeable which means it could harbor some bacteria unless sealed, like with beeswax as Petr does. If you clean right after use, you're probably good. I think the best approach would be to try and keep only the blade in contact with the animal. I will say, the wajgy wajgy knife I have hasn't shown the typical "sweat" lines cheaper leather handles have so I think it's pretty well sealed.

I honestly think you will be fine unless you let it sit in grossness for a long time. You're probably more likely to have trouble with the small screw hole at the buttcap since it will be hard to clean. Also, regular dawn dish soap is still some of the best stuff to pull grime off of most surfaces. This, coming from a food microbiologist.

I wouldn't mind hearing how you like the knife hunting and such. I've had one of his bowies on my radar for a while after having a camp knife made by him very early this year. The thickness makes me think it may not slice as well as I like and I'm also just unfamiliar with elmax (camp knife in V4E).
