I've been stitching quick little blade covers for the knives and swords that I wont carry in my rotation for quite some time. It keeps them from banging edges and getting unwanted marks and such. I dont like to trust the cardboard as it comes off a little to easily, and well, cardboard makes a good strop and I dont really want to strop my knives flats every time I pull them out of the sheath.
I tend to get into my knife cabinet a little more than is common because of the nature of my business, the drawers open and shut a couple of times a day minimum. All that commotion moves the knives around. A blade cover is decent insurance against them tapping each other unnecessarily.
I hope this helps a little.
