Superglue isn't 100% waterproof, be careful there 
Other than that, alcohol and acetone are great- rawhide woould probably work *really* well and you can use acetone or hot water (or maybe alcholol) to get it flat and even.
I've never tried this, and I might have to, but I think you'd be best off starting with layered 1-2 ounce or the thinnest splits you can get. I'm just not sure you'll ever get complete resin penetration in 8 ounce. I 'boiled' a piece in wax or a long time once and still had "raw" leather in the middle.
edit- it might be fun to take all the raggedy end scraps you can find and get a burl pattern!
