Leather razor strops...

I use cowhide strops and diamond pastes from 28u to 1u. I still have a couple of strops that are pristine. Do you recommend that I keep one without compound for finishing?

The silicates found in natural veg tanned leather tend to be smaller than .05u. Chromium Oxide runs about .5u. Plain leather should be used AFTER using any compounds for the very best edge.

Is going from 1u to bare leather too big of a jump?

Hey Knifenut, just been looking at your macro shots of some whittled hair, on your making a strop thread, how does an edge like that compare with say a surgeons scalpel? also thanks for yours and everyone elses input, Kris

If you are willing to spend more time stropping, no. Ideally, you shouldn't need more than 10-15 strokes on a strop to get the desired edge. Going from 1u to bare leather will take considerably more.

A scalpel is not very refined, about 300 grit then polished. Being very thin is its major advantage.

Just got my hanging strop in the mail today, plenty of practice and hopefully I'll get the hang of it, if I hadn't read all these very helpfull posts I'd be doing all wrong for sure, Thanks to all who've posted. Kris
