So.
I have the Kuk Machete from CS and absolutely adore it-- once I got rid of that pesky "utility edge" (which is apparently code for "we were just too damned lazy to finish the edge, so we left it for you to do") and got it down to a fine enough edge to slice paper with no problem. It has proven to be a very useful knife for many things.
However, I have hated the damned sheath since day one. So this weekend (between a few things and since it was ugly outside--which meant no outdoor activities...other than taking the dog outside) I realized that I had a big hunk of saddle leather that I wasn't doing anything with (I made a strop from a piece of it, but that's about it) so I figured I'd go ahead and make me a decent sheath.
I knew I wanted a top pull, and not the crappy button front type that it came with. So I went to HI and looked at how their kuk sheaths were made to get an idea of how I would need to make it. Here's how it came out, I don't think I did too awfully bad for a first in my life attempt at a sheath with no more tools than an old hammer, a pick awl, an SAK, a crook needle, some para cord, a 2 foot piece of 2 X 4, and a few carving tools:
With the knife. The crappy scrollwork on the blade was done by Boredom, Inc's Dremel Division. Wanted the carving on the sheath to somewhat match that on the blade.
It worked...thank God. The carving was done by gouges (I don't own a single leatherworking tool)
The majority of the tools that I used to make it.
I've never made a sheath before, don't really ever plan to again...but you never know when the urge may strike again. There's a CS Roach Belly and a Mora Triflex that are bitching about being left out...can't get better if you don't practice I guess.
Anyhow...figured I'd share in case any of you are looking for ideas to replace your CS Kuk Machete sheaths...
