Leather sheath for the awesome BK9 Combat Bowie - New pictures!

Thank you goose. As you probably noticed, I got a lot of inspiration from your sheaths. I hope you are ok with that.

Can I stain the edges with molten beeswax?

I think it turned out great. Nice work on it. I like how it turned out.

My grandfathers pack from WWII is all dried out, I wouldn't want to use it for anything.

It looks awesome! I think what you want to do is mix parrafin wax and beeswax. Someone else will know for sure.

Wow, great craftsmanship! You did a really nice job on that sheath!

Cool story about the leg strap.

Great looking sheath, I think it is great you added that strap, somthin you will never forget.

Hey maethor, as everyone else has said, looks pretty damn good. The step-by-step pictorial was very informative too. Thanks.

The story about the strap, pack and your granddad was likewise enjoyable. Hopefully that strap and its history will act as a good luck charm and get you out of danger alive too.

One thing: The pic that you have labeled as a close-up of your paracord retention is showing here as just a duplicate of the previous picture of the back of the sheath. Just FYI.

maethor you did an outstanding job !!! thanks for the tutorial I may have to try this someday, maybe this winter !!! when things slow down a bit..

btw, just a heads up, if I were you I'd remove the 'jerk it' smiley from your post, Spark has labeled them for the 'whine and cheese' forum only...

take care,

Thank you, guys. It's good to have some positive feedback.

I have burnished the edge now, using a very simple, yet extremely effective method MyWifeThinksImCrazy told me. I got an old towel (a frottee one, dunno if you guys call it that, it's fabric that has little loops of twine on it, makes it feel softer), made one corner wet with cold tap water and rubbed the water into the unfinished parts. When everything was nice and wet, I took the dry side of the towel and vigorously rubbed the edge with it. I'm really surprised how much effect that simple method has. I also finished the edges with some "Granger's G-Wax" which I've been using for my hiking boots with very good results. The edges look really nice now, no photos though. The lighting here in my room is terrible.

I also changed the retention paracord.

(The loop that the D-ring goes through is not riveted, those are chicago screws. I might have to take it off at some point. You never know, right?)

As you see, the belt loop is now absolutely free to dangle around. Great improvement. I have the knife strapped to my leg at this very moment, and I don't even feel it. Amazing for a knife that size.

I will get some elastic webbing tomorrow and make a PALS attachment, so I can mount a pouch to the sheath to hold some survival goodies. I'll also take some pictures of the edge in detail and of course of me wearing the sheath. I really like the way it sits on my leg, the handle is angled slightly outward because of the very thick belt loop attachment. Makes for an easier draw.

I don't have a scale, but I think the sheath is quite a bit lighter than the knife.

Here are the promised "on leg" pictures. The dangler loop and the leg strap really are a nice team. Very secure and very comfortable.

You can spot the following gear in this picture: Keys on climbing grade 'biner, BK14 in homebrewn kydex sheath (the IWB loop is just a little left from the belt loop on the BK9), a Fenix LD10 and a little random Fisher Space Pen. Aaaand of course the BK9 in its CRAZY SHEATH!

Hope you enjoyed watching me make this awesome project. It really was great fun, and I learned a lot. Thank you all for supporting me, giving me feedback and so on. Thank you guys, you are awesome.

Take care!

Hey maethor, love the sheath and thanks for the pics of it in use.

One question though; what is the keeper-looking loop on your belt right next to the sheath? Got it circled in the pic:

Wow. That is AWESOME! I am thinking I want something like this for my 9 in the future. I really like how you can bend your leg and such, the sheath looks really well done!

slapper, that's right. That's the IWB loop that holds my BK14 sheath. I don't carry it IWB (not very comfortable) but it rides between my belt and pants. Very secure and concealed, I hardly notice it myself. The ring was scrounged from an old belt. You know, that kind of belt with two D-rings. I looked at it and thought "that is just prefect."

If anyone would like to have a sheath like this, shoot me an email, I'm sure we can work something out. I've got more leather on the way.

Thank you very much everyone for the comments and feedback!

Well, that's what I thought it looked like, another knife of some sort being carried concealed. But now I'm kind of confused, and wondering why you seemed surprised that I might carry my BK2 similarly in another thread where you asked:

But I'm thinking, is this something that you would really carry or are we talking about a "because I can" thing here? And do you really need to conceal your BK2 like this?

No biggie, I'm just curious why you'd ask if I "needed" to carry concealed (which I don't, and had said so prior to your question) when that's apparently how you carry your knife regularly from the way you just described it here.
