Leather sheath preferences

I could see a dangler if the fit was loose enough for one handed draw, with a retention keeper of course but would need some shock cord to keep it out of the way.

I carry my belt knives simply because I happen to like them , one handed use isn't a primary concern but it is an occasional need I can't deny.
I can manage just fine with a 2 handed knife but if I've got a knife I can use one handed I do, and if my belt knife isn't one I can then I might as well just retrieve my pocket knife.

These parts horizontal and variations bout all ya see:

No retention straps. Not needed if designed and built correctly. They should stay put riding or not riding a bucking horse or jumping a crick and they do. Ask me how I know. So do my holsters.

I'm not seeing horizontal carries being mentioned... Are they not used much? Or you guys not like them?
I like horizontall carry, but technically I'm supposed to make sure my belt knives aren't concealed and horizontal carry usually would be.
I don't tuck my T shirts in during the summer, and the rest of the year I've normally got a vest and or jacket on that would cover it up.

Truthfully I don't really ever worry about this much because I'm not getting to trouble in my mostly rural area where it'll probably never matter, and I just don't happen to have any horizontal sheaths right now.

Ya, same here... which has kept me from venturing into the fixed blade realm.
I'd like to carry one without having to advertise that I'm carrying one.
I get that.
In my area knives are generally a common enough sight on belts ( mostly folding hunters ) that I likely have little to worry about ,but I do still worry a bit sometimes.
I just try my best to act like it's not there.
Quite often my shirt or jacket will cover the knife a bit and I just let it be for the most part, I'm not going out of my way to break or follow the law one way or the other really.
I'm staying out of trouble so I don't think it really matters too much.

I'm thinking I may want to explore a horizontal or diagonal sheath at some point, I think I have a knife that could use a sheath.

I have a horizontal, small of the back sheath that Mr. Horsewright Horsewright made for me. Totally enjoy using it. No retention strap needed as it is made to the knife. Put it on in the morning and before long you have forgotten it is there until it is needed. Does not matter how or where I sit, it is comfortable IMG_20220708_070830025.jpg
It also depends on the knife. My buck 639 with the original factory Kraton grip would be out of place in a leather sheath, in my opinion. Now a knife with stag or similar material and some wooden scales just belong in a leather sheath. Case-by-case basis for me.

Here is a beautiful pancake holster which Dave Ferry (Horsewright) made me for a Western L88. I wear it in the small of my back and reach around my hip to draw the knife with my right hand. Totally secure, out of the way and still easily reachable.

I’m not a huge fan of vertical belt sheaths for a couple reasons. They generally seem bulky and catch on things. Also, I live in an urban area and, as others said, they kind of stick out. I like small fixed blades and to me the best way to carry one is in a pocket sheath. I’ve never tried a horizontal sheath or a pancake sheath and might like those. They look like they would be more streamlined and less noticeable than a vertical sheath.

I made a pocket sheath for a small fixed blade I sometimes carry.

I’m not much of a leather worker so it’s a little rough but it gets the job done. The clip has very good retention.

Dangler, deep fit, lots of friction. I won't buy knife that falls out when you blink your eyes.

This one is very comfortable in the car. 6" blade. Won't win a beauty contest but works very well. (this is a modified Buck 119 sheath)

Length is less an issue than weight. Anything below 10 oz is great.

Although not your cup of tea, I like to carry my medium sized fixed blades (most carried blade length is 4-6") in a short dangler, open pouch/friction fit leather sheath.

The vast majority of my fixed blade carry is when I'm on ATVs and hunting or general woods bummimg, so the short dangler allows more carry comfort when sitting and riding from a seated position.
