I would like to know what is the normal thinkness to sheath making will be making bowie knives and skinners,, plus can you explain... sizes.. thanks for looking!!
10oz is the norm, IMO. You can make sheaths with 8-12oz... maybe even thicker or thinner, depending on the construction. Think of the ounce measurement as 1/64".
Depends on the layering as well. If you are working with say 2 layers of 5oz on each side then its gonna be just as tough if not tougher then a single 10oz layer on each side. When I do inlays I will use several layers usually around 4oz give or take. It still comes out nice and strong.
Doing two layers each side will also allow for the skin side inside the sheath which makes for a nice inside without having to line it.
I like 8oz not to thick not to thin and easy to wet mold. I will say it does make a difference on what type of sheath you make. I have used this weight for welt and pouch sheaths with no problem. I do like to get it split so its the same weight over most of the leather.
