Leather Strops: Who uses 'em, what for, how, why, and how's it working out?

Bench mount on a block for flat bevels.
Hanging for convex and straight razors, although with care a flat beveled edge can be stropped.
This too has been posted at least a dozen times before...

I'm making use of the thread. You got a problem with that?

In fact, I'm sure almost every topic has been covered before. Should we all stop posting, close all the threads, and only search for answers?

With that? No... That's why I answered your question. With people too lazy to look up the information, but relying upon the good nature of others to take the time to spoon-feed the information to them? Yes. I do.

No, you search for the answers to your questions 'first.' THEN you request more specific information that hasn't been given before, or wasn't presented clearly enough to understand. No one minds helping to clarify information by presenting it in different ways than done before. But personally, "I" object to someone who is too lazy and self-centered to try to help themselves 'first,' instead asking others to do the work for them.

Or do you suppose that the 'search function' at the top of the page was put there for decoration? Why do YOU suppose that so many years worth of information has been stored? Or why so many people here collect posts on different subjects to store in their own computers, especially considering they could always come here and just ask the same questions again and again.

After answering the same questions time and time again, many of us get tired of answering the same questions over and over again. There comes a time when enough is enough. In the past six years that I've been here, do you know how many times I've answered this specific question that you just posted? If you don't know, it's because you were too lazy to do a search and see if the information was already available to you!

And that, my friend, is selfish. You wanted someone else to do the work for you, and spoon-feed you the information. And yes, I've got a problem with that.

Man, I've been a member on various forums since the Internet came out. There are people like you on every single one of them. You guys always get so bothered by people not searching that you spend more time lecturing about searching then it would take to just post an answer. Or, if you really get pissed off by it, you can choose not to post at all.

To come in here and write post after post of how people not searching wastes your time.... Well... You must have 70 percent of you time allocated to bullshit and 30 useful posts.

No wonder that Fred guy left.

What about loose hanging vs wood mounted?
I'm assuming the wood is easier to hold the angle with...

Sort of a 'trick answer' to that question, at least as I see it. A firmly-mounted leather strop would theoretically be easier to set the correct angle. But it's also easier to compress the leather underneath the edge's apex when it's mounted over a firm or hard backing, so the end result may or may not be as good as it could be, depending on individual touch. I like using the belt as a hanging strop, because the lack of a backing means the leather won't compress as much, and the pressure against it stays very light. Sort of a light 'skimming' feel when using it, instead of the somewhat stronger 'pull' or 'draw' (friction) felt when slightly compressing the leather during the stroke, which tends to make the leather curl or wrap around the apex. That light skimming action seems to be just the right feather-touch to work for me. Since the belt will 'bend' or deflect in an arc during such use, it's wise to lay the blade somewhat flatter to the leather when initiating the stroke, very similar to how a barber would lay the spine of a straight razor on the leather when stropping it.

Gee, guys, answer the question or don't. Say thanks for the answer or don't. But snapping at each other? Turn off the computer, go out and play. Come back after you're feeling more like enjoying the forums.

You're absolutely correct. Good luck with your stropping.

Had you actually performed a search, you'd know just how wrong you are.

No wonder that Fred guy left.

Oh... the irony of it.
David, I'll leave it to you to answer the stopping questions from now on. You've saved all my posts and have the information.
I'm going to join Fred.

Hang in there, Stitch. I'll see if I can link a few of your recent write-ups at least; and maybe some of the older ones too. ;)

(...and here's wishing that EVERYBODY will take a deeeep breath, pretty please. :) )

For starters:

This is the 'sticky' at the top half of the Maint forum page:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/750008-Stropping-angle-plus-pressure

And in some sympathy to Stitchawl's frustrations, he has thoroughly documented his thoughts and experiences on the topic, many times over. The top-linked thread is from just days ago, and the others are some that I've saved as bookmarks in my browser:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1199769-Stropping-leather-thoughts
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/762396-Hard-or-quot-soft-quot-leather-for-strop
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/718578-Horsehide-strop-leather!

And in this forum, most any thoroughly-discussed topics about sharpening will almost always interweave stropping preferences and methods into the "How do I sharpen/polish/refine this blade/steel/etc?" questions that get asked on a daily basis. This is why some of us will sometimes get a little impatient in re-posting answers that we discussed at length only days, or even hours ago (sometimes in threads that are still posted & active on the first page of the Maint forum).

It really does pay to just 'lurk around' for a while (say a few days or a week or two), reading what might be discussed in the first couple or three or four pages of threads in the forum, to get a feel for what's already been discussed and if some of the answers can be found in those posts. And when finally ready to ask for advice that hasn't otherwise been found there, a very specific handful of questions will usually get a polite and informative answer. For example, "What compound would work best for (blank) steel type, using (blank) materials and tools available to me, at my current skill level?"

I have to say that of all the locations in BF, MT&E is one of my favorites. I learn a lot and people are helpful.
Mr. Stitchawl , i would appreciate if you stick around and don't leave to join Fred. I'm an avid reader of your leather/ strops posts.
Fred, should consider his return also
Thanks

And this is exactly why I seldom post on threads like this...wonder what people did before they were able to ask their questions on the interwebz?
