Leather vs neoprene backers

I'm doing a few hemp wraps on knife blades i have and am wondering what the main difference would be between leather and neoprene backers.

I've done a few wrapped handles so far and have only used leather for the backing before the wrap, but see lots of makers using neoprene.

What is the difference between the two when all is said and done.

If it helps, I use west systems 3 marine grade wood epoxy

Once you seal it no difference. Neoprene for me is just easier to buy in various thickness and widths leather is harder to find in the right thickness given weights and what not
