i own 2 leatherman charge ti multi tools. one is marked charge R and the other is charge tm. can anybody tell me if there is a difference between the 2?

R = Registered
TM = Trademark

Essentially, the second marking means it's a patented design. The first means it's been registered with the patent office in the US (it can take a while to get a patent approved).

This would make your "R" marked Charge of an earlier manufacture date - there should be a stamped date code on the inside of the handles.

An R with a circle around it designates that there is a registered Trademark with the US Patent and Trademark office. A TM (or SM) means that a trademark is either pending or likely to be applied for. The former has an actual legal standing and the latter not so much. Most likely the TM version is the earlier one. You can seriously jeopardize a trademark application if your goods or services bear a Registered mark if not currently listed on the Principal Register.

This has nothing to do with patents whatsoever.
