Leatherman for survival??

Is the can opener locking mechanism the same on the Wave as the Pulse ?
Nope.

The implements on the Pulse lock, but the mechanism is... how to say this... not one of Tim Leatherman's finest moments. ;)

The inside implements on the original Wave don't lock, but I've rarely missed that feature on mine.

All the implements of the new Wave lock. The mechanism is both secure and user-friendly, unlike the one on the Pulse.

Just came back from a 10 day hunting trip.
Carried a leatherman, four inch fixed blade and a three inch folder.
Used the leatherman to fix a screw in my rifle.
Could have probably carried one of my gerber multi-tools or my SAK and done just as well.
I usually take one of my multi-tools instead of my SAK but I think it is just personal preference.
In most situations I prefer the gerbers over the leatherman, however I keep one multi-tool in each of the fanny packs I use and that happened to be the pack I grabbed.

I have an old Gerber multi-tool- it's not perfect but it does the job. I won't delineate the scenarios where you might need a pair of pliers in the bush but DAMN a pair of pliers is very handy indeed. Go the multitool!
