I've been carrying a leatherman wave on me everyday for about the past 2 years it's seen some heavy action from jungles of central america to the Rockys to Moab In a small dry box while snorkeling in the carribean. and through every work day in NYC EMS I've grown to love the versatility of it, but lately I've had a hankering for a classic victorinox I'm looking at the field master as it has most of the atttribute I'm used to with the exception of the pliers, But I don't know....THose pliers have come in handy a time or Two.. Just wanted some feed back....For those of you out there used to carrying a large multitool would you feel comfortable with a SAK? P.S. I wouldn't consider the pliers on the some of the SAK's I think there a little flimsy, and take up too much space.

I always end up prefering SAK's over Multi-Tools, but I agree that the pliers on them are not really that useful as pliers, but they do make great fish-hook removers.

I've always carried Both my Leatherman Wave and my Vic Camper at the same time. SAK stays in my pocket and gets used for light cutting and food prep. but the wave comes into action when i need to really fix something around camp. its been great in the boat when ive needed to do work on the motor. and removing fish hooks. it really isnt that much more weight to keep the multi tool on the belt and throw a SAK in your pocket.

But if i could only have the one, i think i would take the multi tool.

If you need pliers, a Leatherman-type multitool is hard to beat. Little SAK pliers don't really compare. I've wondered about those Wenger SAKs with larger pliers, but they generally don't seem to be available in the US.

Consider the Vic Spirit - sort of the best of both worlds (and I greatly prefer it to my Wave). I always carry a SAK as well (Farmer or Soldier).

The new Leatherman Charge TTI is hard to beat. I have the older Charge Ti and the one hand opening 154CM blade is great. The file and saw are better and tougher than on the SAK, as are most of the rest of the tools. With a full size, one hand opening 3" blade and a one hand opening 3" serrated sheepsfoot, you have a large array of options.

I carried a SAK for years. With the Leatherman Charge, it's no contest.

I've had a Wave or a while now, And I would choose it over a sak. The blade is better on the sak, But thats why I have a wave and a 110 everyday ;)
now, the wave and a sak would be your best bet, plus their not very expensive, another bonus.

now we dont want to start a Leatherman SAK argument
or an airgun argument weather .177 or .22
or any other argument like that

I have a leatherman charge XTI and it's awsome. Problem is, it also weighs nearly a pound. Sometimes I want something lighter and more compact but which still has a saw, file, blade, etc. So it's on my short list to pick up a SAK of some kind. Just haven't gotten around to it is all. Will one of these days.

Seems to me that both the leatherman and the SAK have their place, depending on the circumstances of your travels.

I always carry a SAK with me, but when we are hanging out in the big city, I also have my leatherman tool on hand.

that rescue tool, is almost exactly like my vic fireman, just with out the window punch, mine is black :P

Well, here we go again...:D...I carry a SAK but as a machinist the toolbox is always near.

I have both. The SAK is part of my urban EDC, while the multitool is for camping/bugging out/SHTF sorts of things. The SAK is really handier for everyday use.

I chose the Leatherman over the SAK mainly because I think multi tools are more versatile. Its your decision.

Like rzwieg said, at home or work I have plenty of tools handy. However I finally broke down and bought a Leatherman Blast at Xmas, and I'm really pleased with it. It lives in my coat pocket.
Never been a fan of SAK's... too many compromises. My most common EDC is a Buck 501, with or without the multi-tool. All it does is cut, and cut well.

+1 for a Leatherman.

I've carried a Vic Tinker for years, and later on switched to alternating a Vic Hiker and Farmer. About a year ago, I thought I'd try EDC with my Charge XTi. It has been clipped inside my front pocket ever since.

I've had a wave since 1998, but never carried it on a daily basis. The pocket clip feature on the more recent Leatherman tools has made the difference for me. SAKs are great tools, don't get me wrong. i think the Leatherman Charge/Wave packs a little more punch. Also, I find the Charge clipped to the pocket more comfortable than an SAK sitting in the pocket. I dunno, it just works for me.
