Leatherman Pulse: 1st impressions/mini-review

I got my pulse today. Initial impressions are quite favorable. Mine came with the cordura sheath. The sheath seems a little bigger than needed for the tool. I wish it was a litle more form fitting.

I would like to see a supertool constructed with similar refinements of the pulse.

Kelly, Mine does, but my Wave got better with use, so I hope this one will too.

Warning: Rant Ahead

Why the hell did they change the scissors!?!?!?!?

They were almost perfect before and now they are smaller. If anything they should try to make them bigger, but the same size would be ok. I am tempted to get a PSTII and do a scissors transplant (anyone ever try that?).

I guess I am going to start carrying my Micra again.

Other than that little gripe, I really like it. Doesn't fit well in teh sheath because of the locking mech, but if you put the locking mech toward the back of the sheath with the pivots on the bottom, it does pretty well. I have been using my Wave sheath some though.

I remember seeing the picture and description of the pulse about a year ago. Man I wanted to get my hands on one then. Well I just bought one and I am very happy I did. I want to spend some time with it before I start spewing at the mouth buuttt some of you have mentioned Botachtactical.com and I thought I should point you to http://www.knifeforums.com/ubb/Forum62/HTML/000815.html and http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum25/HTML/001179.html

I saw the post on Botach after I ordered. I should do the smart thing and check the Good, Bad, and Ugly before I order from anyone. Next time I will. I did receive my Pulse from Botach today. I must be one of the lucky ones

I really like the Pulse. I just wish it had all the tools of the Supertool, maybe in the future Leatherman will make one.

Yup. You still get the "clump" effect.

Good thing too ?!?! Because if the phillips head screw driver gets pushed in to the handle too far there is no nail nick, grove, anything or any way to access it that I have been able to figure out. You have to count on the clump effect and pull up on the Can opener.

Boriqua,
If I pull the can opener out, I can slide my thumbnail down where the canopener was, and reach the nail nick, even with the phillips pushed all the way down. It's not TOO difficult but if you have no nails, it would be tough.

Dont get me wrong Ive have been carrying and using the tool for the last couple of days and my impressions are positive but if I have to open the can opener in order to access the phillips its still adding steps. I also lift the can opener to access it but fortunatly since my tool is very new, tool clump brings up the phillips.

I got a small Timberline cordura sheath today that is perfect for the Pulse. It seems to fit better than the factory sheath and it allows for horizontal and vertical carry. I got it from the Knifecenter for a few dollars. Timberline also makes a larger version of the sheath that fits the Supertool and other like sized multitools.

I really like the Pulse, I just wish it had more implements. A serrated blade, an awl, and a saw would make it the ultimate tool.

Shootist, I kinda do and don't agree. I'd like to see another model come out with all the tools you mentioned but I like to keep the pulse just as it is, simply because I carry it in my pocket. I like the lighter wt of it. I already have heavier tools. The supertool is the same basic design as the pulse only without scissors and knurled unlocking knobs. All the tools lock, though, and in the same way the pulse does. All they need to do is add scissors to the supertool and you'd have your tool. Be a biggin' though.

I'll agree that the Pulse makes more sense for everyday urban carry. I sure would like to see the Supertool made with the Pulse's refinements for outdoor carry though.

It would be big, but contrary to popular belief size does matter.

Got my Pulse yesterday, brand new, from an ebay auction for $37.50. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1107319149
I like the Wave, but it's to wobbley in the closed position and the phillips screwdriver slips while in use. The SuperTool is great for it's size and assorted implements, but the Posi-Lock feature is cumbersome. I hope they'll consider the Pulse lock for the SuperTool and then it would be excellent. The new scissors are better than the Wave and the PST II because those have a tendancy to slip over the stop tab while putting pressure on them to cut stubborn materials.
The Pulse is a good size for everyday carry and has enough implements for convenient utility. It doesn't fit into it's leather sheath very easily yet, but I'm sure it will with time.
Overall an excellent tool for my money and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a safe and convenient pocket tool.

Some great news from the SHOt show. It seems that Leatherman will be putting Pulse like upgrades on the Supertool. Rounded handles and a Pulse type lock. YES!!!!!!
