All the leatherman line is a disgrace to the multitool industry. Their screwdrivers are soft and sharp throughout their length, and have no other uses. They are just a bunch of unshaped pieces of ever rusting steel.
The scissors on the Micra and the Wave bend when doing something a tad strenuous. And they fail to cut close to the surface and close to the tip as well.
All their pliers chips off at the jaws, and are painful to use except for the Wave, which is very comfortable, until you accidentally open one of the knives when using the pliers, and resting your thumb on the side of them, thus opening the one handed opening blades. You choose- a painful palm or a bloody one! :(
The awl on the Supertool is so blunt that it is useless.
The diamond-coated file is stupid. When you have such a coarse metal file, because the diamond side doesn't work at all on many materials. Instead they should have made a thinner metal file (both sides), and a much more jagged hacksaw with a diamond coating.
Except the crappy Micra, all the handles of the tools are loose, and open by themselves, which is also a problem when using inside tools, because the handles doesn't cling.
If you want an idiotically constructed "multi" tool that will fail you when you need it the most, and would look like a wreck after a week on duty, or would rust after a month in your drawer, chose Leatherman- if you like it you deserve it!
Any comments? :p ;)

Hi,
I have a leatherman wave that I use daily.
In using mine I have not found anything that you have said in this thread about the leathermans to be true.
I really like my leatherman wave:)

Whats up with your other post were you say:

<i>"Esav, I've bought the wave today and it's great. It has a charm to it, like the SAK, and unlike the other leatherman line. It isn't tactical as such, but is capable for such work, and that is important these days. After further inspection I'll give my evaluation.
Thanks a lot, it's always nice to have a good advice."</i>

What made you change your mind about it?

I have a number of Leatherman tools that I have used for a number of years. I have found them to be quality tools that work well and last long.

I have carried a Leatherman mini tool for years now
mostly for the pliers, it does what i need it for
just fine.
My only complaint would be no belt clips, other than
the one full size belt clip model all others must be
sheathed to be secured. I want a Juice with a belt clip!

I carry my Leatherman PST with me every day and use it almost every day. I've used it for everything in my duties as a police officer. My 13 year old son has his lawn business in the summer and uses (beats)his extensively... it still looks new.

Its one of the best bangs for your buck. Their customer service is outstanding. I hope I meet Tim Leatherman at a show some day. I'd like to shake his hand.

Shmulik,

Send me your rusty, soft, sharp, chipped, painful, blunt, stupid, loose and painful Wave. You don't deserve it.

Troll.

While his presentation is strongly slated towards trolling, there are many valid points I would agree with. Their customer service is great though, I broke the jaws off of my Supertool and it was replaced with no questions asked.

Not only has my Wave done everything I've asked of it, it's also flame-proof. Back in your hole, troll.

I've already got my WAVE so Shane45-1911 can have that,
and I'll take any other Leathermans you want to get rid of,
I'm not sure I deserve them, but I'll try! :(

Who knows?

Maybe Leathermans (or is it Leathermen?) are not as tough as we really think they are. Maybe shmulik really beat the crap out of his. After all, these are folding tools. However, that doesn't begin to explain his other unlikely complaints.

The question is, if Leatherman tools are not as strong as they should be, what multi-tools are? The answer is none. I wouldn't buy a Swisstool. Now that metal is soft. Those tools must be made with the same metal they make their SAK blades out of.

Actually, I think he's kidding us -- or else he's having an exceptionally bad day!

I drop my Micra in my pocket every day, and slide a Supertool on my belt if I'm going anywhere I might imagine I would need it. That Supertool has stood up to a lot of hard work.

I'm curious just how pink and soft your hands are, if those handles hurt when you use one. I've cut hurricane fence with mine, and thick chain links. Didn't even leave a mark on my palm. Didn't leave a mark on the tool, either.

I won't mock the other multis, though. I gave my Schrade Tough Tool to my brother, but they named that one right. Solid.

OTOH, a golem could probably scrunch even a Supertool into a little ball ...

Could be the guy got jabbed in the palm, got ticked off, and is venting here.

Personally I've tweaked out a couple of the Leatherman's tools myself. One got a sizeable nick in the wirecutter cutting something I believed it should be able to handle. Another is the flathead AND phillips that I've bent substantially, again believing that it should be able to handle the job. I haven't had a problem with loose handles, just the opposite. Some times I wished the durn thing would give a little...

It's not as substantial a tool as a group of similar hand tools in my opinion. Not for extremely hard use. The warranty and customer service are top notch, and that goes a long way.

I agree with adding pocket clips, very good idea.

I'd much rather have a full set of Craftsmen screwdrivers, Channelock pliers & wire strippers, Nickelson files, a Benchmade 710HS and Spyerco Rescue. Matter of fact I do have all those tools, but they won't fit in a small pouch ;) so I carry the original Leatherman in my backback and leave the other tools at home -- except for the BM folder.

The Leatherman tools are great for doing lots of small tasks adequately and for having readily available all the time. They were never meant to replace the real thing(s).

I have carried and used leathermans for over seven years now after my Gerbers pinched my hand so bad that it took two weeks to heel. Ive used the "Super" for over 6 years, two and half of that were working at a fertilizer plant, where everything gets destroyed quickly, and my Super Tool is still on my belt. I frankly think they are hte absolute best multi tool on the market, they are well made and well thought out. Im not sure what you have been using yours for that you are unhappy. Leatherman also has one of the best guarentees in the biz, 25 unconditional, they stand behind their products. Also take a look at all the other multi tools out there ( big companies and knock off ) they are all based on the leatherman.

Perhaps we should identify the multi-tool for what it is a "multi-tool" aka "jack of all trades"....master of none. It is convenient for most stuff but if the going gets tough, get a proper tool for the job. I have a "wave" and know that it has its limits, managed to snap the blade off an older model (supertool), twisting it too much trying to pry a "durian" open, thereafter I realised there are limitations, mainly the thinness the blades and the "stiffness"/ "flexibility" cannot be avoided. One thing though.....it sure beats trying to fit a toolbox in your pocket or lugging it around everywhere you go, I kno cos I ride a bike and I have a habit of carrying a set of full sized tools with me whenever I ride...plus the "wave" of course.

Regards Bernard

I think Bernard said it right. Too many people buy a multi-tool and think it can replace everything in their tool box. Multi-tools are handy and extremely useful and save you alot of trips back to the tool box, but they certainly have their limitations.
I've seen guys cut heavy cable with a Micra and then complain how it nicked the blades! What did they expect, the Micra is not designed for cable-cutting.

You have to be smarter than the tool you're using, and you have to know the tool's limitations.

Allen.

I can't say anything about leathermen since my new Wave is still on its way to me, but the way this post ended sounds awfully trollish to me.
