I carry a Leatherman Wave as my EDC. I recently sharpened the plain edge blade on my old Spyderco Sharpmaker using the white and brown rods. The edge shaved hair off my arm, although with a little drag. The edge seemed good enough for rough, knockaround use. Today, I had to make 4 cuts in 3/8 inch poly rope. The plain edge blade instantly dulled and would not cut the rope even once. The serrated blade cut the rope with zero problem.
I am curious as to why the plain blade instantly dulled. Maybe my sharpening was faulty? I do not own a strop yet.
Would the diamond Sharpmaker rods leave a toothier edge that would work better on abrasive stuff like cardboard and poly rope.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
