Tinkering around with my gear, and whipped up a little sub-kit for my Wave sheath. The Wave rides in my BOB, so the sheath kit is just another level of redundancy.

Here we have innocent, unassuming Wave.

But it has a few little secrets...

Here is where they hide until needed.

And back in their nests, snug as bugs.

Contents: 2 fire straws, 3 small hooks, 15' 8lb. mono, 20' 30lb. Fireline, 1 small ferro rod, and about 6 ft. of braided cord on the bottom of the sheath. It is just the barest of bare, but unused space in a kit is just sinful, so what the heck, I used it.

slick little rig you made up there. Can you explain those fire straws a little? I have never heard/seen those before. Very interested.

They are made from a regular drinking straw, I pinch one end with needle nose pliers, leaving about 1/4" exposed which I gently heat with a Bic lighter until it rolls back onto itself, and melts shut. Then I stuff it within about 1/4" of the open end with vaseline coated cotton ball. Then repeat the pinch, melt, seal routine on the open end, and you have a non-messy, waterproof, compact tinder, that can also serve as scrape/cut soother, lip balm, and blade protection for carbon steel.
To use, just cut open, fluff cotton, and hit it with a nice spark from your ferro rod, or lighter/match. A tightly packed 2 1/2" straw should give you at least 2 solid minutes of pretty wind resistant flame.

The kit is very cool. I have a bunch of different kits like it I have put together over the years, plus the SOS kits from Victorinox, but nothing that neat and contained....

Sigh now I have to put one together again....... :)

Nice job, and the firestraws are a wonderful idea!

I have a Surge Ti that uses the same style sheath. Your kit is EXACTLY what I would put into mine. Thanks for getting it all together, I'm going to make one of my own tonight!

Actually, a BSA Hotspark with minimal handle trimming, or plain 2" X 1/4" ferro rod will fit in the side, I just had that broken piece, so I used it, and it is at times a booger to grip (but MUCH better than nothing). I also could have made my firestraws about 1/2" to 3/4" longer with plenty of room, so be smarter than me and measure. You could also MAYBE slip a single Micropur tablet pack in the back as well, but that is "Pur conjecture":D:D.

Nice little kit. I put something similar together with a Vic Farmer as the star of the show.
