Leatherman Withdrawal!

I have been wearing a Leatherman Wave on my belt for a number of years now. That and my M2 Leatherman led flashlight in the leather holder right on my hip. I have now gone three days without it and I am having serious withdrawal. I can't wear it anymore because I am finishing my Master's and becoming a teacher. I can't wear it in a school. Even if I buy the bladeless version, it is still not a good idea for a beginning teacher. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get over my serious loss?

p.s. I do have a swiss tech keytool on my ring, so I'm not hopelessly lost.

Wow, I'm surprised you're allowed even that. I wouldn't tell anyone, though.

So how do you get over your "loss?" Well, either you get over it, or you find another occupation.

Get the bladeless version and put it in either a pocket holster or Bill's urban wallet. If it's in your pocket nobody's gonna know.

What about a smaller Leatherman, like the Juice S2? You could remove the blade and still have pliers, scissors and screw drivers.

I'm a teacher, and I keep my multitool in my school bag; not as good as on my belt, but always close at hand. It comes in handy regularly too.

*Shameless plug* I have a LM Juice Pro up for trade in the Exchange, if you want to switch to a smaller, less "scarey" tool . . .

First off what are you going to be teaching and where? My principal knows I am a knife nut and as long as I adhere to state laws, folder and not over 3", I am golden. I have gotten away with a FB a couple of times but just a necker or some sort. Heck I trade with a students father all the time. His wife is a teacher as well and she saves me shipping buy bringing then to me, at work. Ask you may be surprised. Congrats on finishing your masters. Big accomplishment.

And WOW 5 years and your first post. Way to go and Welcome.

If its lawful to do so, consider just carrying a Wave on your belt like its meant to be there. Now days, people have so many Crackberries and other devices on their belts that a sheathed Wave would fit right in. My sons attend a Latin school, and a teacher there has a Leatherman on his belt every day. Art thou a Man, or a Mouseth?

^^the noodle is right
I teach some classes at university twice a year and I carry in plain view, no problems at all. It's not a leatherman though, but I think a leatherman would be perceived as 'friendlier' than a knife

I have ordered a Boker Wharcom to use as a money clip and will be getting that Monday. I was thinking of carrying that, since no one will notice, but I will miss my pliers and screwdriver. I am going to try the Wharcom for a couple of weeks and if I still miss my leatherman I will go back to it. Wish me luck.

Think also about the day when Principal Wigglesworth needs a pair of pliers and comes to you for help. After you save the day, he'll promote you to vice-Principal and give you added responsibility and a hefty raise. So think of the Wave as an investment.

Amen. Had one on once upon a time and one of my female coworkers saw it and asked what it was. I showed her and she freaked out at the sign of a knife. I explained that it was an integral part of the tool, and she seemed to calm down a little. But she still seemed a bit nervous about it. Then came the day when she needed some nylon packing tape cut. Guess who she came to and asked me to cut it.

In my state it's illegal to carry any knife within a school building. Before you buy that boker you might want to check the law in your state.

Edit: I didn't notice you live in New Hampshire. Knife carry should be OK for you. Just keep it out of sight.

Good ole' New Hampshire. Everything's legal here. Last time I checked our fixed blade legal limit for carry was 16 inches. I'm never moving.

If you want to have your pliers and a screw driver look at the Leatherman Skeletool. I would go with the CX model you get premium steel and all the tools you need. If that is not an option I would go with a slippie, 4" adjustable wrench, and I have found a set of screwdriver bits that fit your keys. Pm me for a link if you're interested. I am sure we can figure something out.

Skeletool still has the blade, and I will keep my Wave over that anyday. I did find the c-clip for my S2 leatherman led flashlight to go on my keys, so that helps with the light problem. Still think I am going to keep the Wharcom as a money clip. While looking around I think I will have to pick up a Boker Trance for my truck now. I really like the Boker CLB collaborations.

My first thought was e-mail me your address and I' ll send you an S-2, however, upon further thought, your main concern is tenure. Whatever you end up with ---"Do Not Violate School Policy". Tenure!

I got my Boker Wharcom and I decided to try wearing it in my back pocket next to my wallet. I put my S2 flashlight on my keyring. I think I am okay now. Just have to use my Utilikey for screws and have my Leatherman Wave in my shoulder bag that I carry my lunch and books in. Now I just have to order a Trance for an EDC that I can leave in the truck during school.

When I'm at work/school, in addition to the multi in my bag, I carry a small, traditional slipjoint in my pocket. It is elegant enough for dress clothes, unintimidating, and useful. Everyone in the school knows I have these things and nobody minds. The multitool has come out plenty of times to fix stuff in the classrooms, the copy room, and things like kids' glasses. I even used it once on a field trip to fix a girl's flipflop. You might go ahead and try carrying your Leatherman. The worst that could happen is that you are asked not to.

Surely you could at least get away with a SAK - everyone recognizes those as harmless "geek gear."

Put a Sponge Bob sticker on a Leatherman Surge and your colleagues will think you are the coolest guy ever . You can get away with just about anything if you put a Sponge Bob sticker on it.
