Leave the Folder Home?

My Wenger Mountaineer was/is always my wilderness folder knife.
I also like a multi-bladed, multi-tooled big swiss, but, for day hiking, the slim packing Wenger has always done what I needed.
Have the locking blade with the wood saw is a big -->

I could substitute a samll fixed blade for it, sure, but then wouldn't have the saw feature.

I'll continue carrying it as my wilderness folder.

The steel in the Howler, SR 101 (52100 with special heat treat) really is good. For that alone, I would get the HRLM. Plus, it's a great size and shape, very useful.

For god sakes why didn't you say that in the first place man? Get the Howler.:D Love mine.

I use this for the winter:

(Out of sheath)

In the dryer seasons, the only time I bring a fixed blade is if I'm doing lots of chopping and batoning, building shelters, the weather is unusually bad or I'm just going to do "messy" work. But for walking around the woods with some friends for a few hours late in the afternoon, making a fire and cooking some food, something like a SAK or Opinel is all I feel bothered to carry. Fixed blades have many advantadges over folders outside and on extended trips I always bring at least a Mora or beefier puukko, but if I can get by with a small, lightweight folder, I will.
