Leave the sale price on sold threads

One of the most valuable services that Bladeforums can provide to its member is the hosting of a transparent marketplace. When sellers remove prices -- or even the entire posting -- from sales threads after a sale, it diminishes the service of a transparent marketplace.

If people want to sell knives here, they should be required -- since they don't do this on their own -- to leave the sales price in the completed thread after the sale so that members can get an honest sense of the true market value of the knives they want to sell or buy. Even Ebay gives you a chance to see what the knife sold for. Bladeforums should exceed the expectations of Ebay.

I like where you're going with this, I've noticed myself about the prices being, well not there anymore, along with the picture of what was sold (maybe this is just me).

If I see a custom piece that was sold and I like it, I'd like to be able to present a pic of what I want.

I'm so fed up with the deletion of asking prices I've started making notes in my threads hoping others will follow.

Count me a proud follower and humble leader. JUST LEAVE THE PRICES PEOPLE!

Save the picture and put a price in the file. Then you can go back and see it any time. I think the asking price can vary wildly depending on the motivation of the seller. And asking someone to keep a file in photobucket after the knife is gone is asking a lot. They may need to make some room in photobucket to be able to offer another knife.

They don't need to leave a price in photo bucket, just leave the price in the sales thread. Leaving the price is a service to forum members. Yes the selling price will vary according to the motivation -- and knowledge -- of the seller, but by leaving the prices we give both potential buyers and sellers a sense of what the knife is worth. We all lose when the price is censored.

I have 50+ pages of photos in my free photobucket account...I don't think that a few pics will be that big of a deal. Maybe delete the pic after a few years?

I'm extremely new here so I don't think my opinion counts for much BUT leaving the sale price up in the for sale threads is an EXCELLENT idea and should be a rule. Being I am new here and I'm using this forum as a place to buy my knifes it's extremely helpful to be able to look at old threads and have somewhat of a guide to the value of the knifes being sold.

I agree with you.

Many times it's the buyer that requests to have the price taken down. If the buyer gets a really good deal, they do this in an attempt to preserve the value of the item and others like it. I don't agree with that practice, but it still happens.

Yes, this is not a new discussion, but the problem remains. If moderators can't police sales threads, you can't police them, but allowing sales prices to be censored under the rules is part of the problem. Please change the rules so we have a fair and transparent marketplace. Transparency helps the members. Secrecy hurts the members.

I leave my prices up for the reasons listed. However, remember that the asking price is not always what the knife sells for in the end. I am certainly not going to change the price in my post to reflect the actual sale price. Additionally, I don't need more rules in my life, especially on my own knife sales! I will leave them up because I want to, but a rule dictating this would irritate me.

I really cannot begin to imagine the huge pain in the face this would be. If I pay membership fees, I don't want more rules. We have enough rules as it stands now. Sellers can edit their posts at their leisure, and it's a great privilege to be able to do so. I understand that some people remove their pictures because they do not want others to pilfer and use them as their own and not even ask permission or give credit where it is due. Prices can and do fluctuate, what is hot right now, today may not be so a week from today or 2 months down the road. If you have a question on a knife price, ask in a thread in GKD. Discussion is good indeed. The Exchange is in great shape and it gets better every month. The GBU section has yielded a lot of great results for people. If someone deletes their prices, let it be. You can vote with your wallet.

Good post Ernie1980.

I do like to see what knives have sold for. It helps to gauge what a BNIB knife on the secondhand is worth, what users are worth, and to ascertain trade values. However, to be frank, whatever the price was that an item actually sold for is really just the seller and the buyers business. So I vote no rule.

If you sell your house, the sales price is public information by law. The reason is that a transparent real estate market helps both buyers and sellers in that market. How would you appraise a house if there are no comps? How would you get a loan if you can't establish a fair value for the house you want to buy? By requiring the sales price be made public, the housing market is much fairer and far more orderly.

All forums need rules. Requiring -- or even asking -- that sellers leave the sales price helps us all. We're all anonymous here, unless we choose not to be, so whose privacy is the forum protecting?

The bottom line is that the sales portion of the forum would better serve the members of this forum if the sales prices are not censored. And honestly, while I appreciate the job -- the difficult job -- that moderators do to help us all and while I appreciate the management for providing this space, it's really the members who provide content, and content is the value.

It's been discussed before, just like the "PayPal gift" issue. It's not going to change. Deal with with it.

I've noticed a lot of members have stopped requesting the "Gift" option lately. Some that would exclusively ask for it have begun asking for a single price, shipped, put the door, to your home, everything included. Threads look much better and it looks like those conversations worked. I hope this in particular stays as it is.

I would just mark my stuff as sold next to the prices. I like people having a reference point when they make other purchases. Deleting the prices doesn't benefit anyone.

Although it doesn't seem to be up for a vote, my vote is to leave the prices up. I agree that it would be a service to members, and don't understand why deleting prices has gotten so much more common.

My $.02

We've been thru this discussion many times before:

With so many members there is not enough time in the day for moderators to police all the threads to make sure pricing is intact. Therefore the rules specifically state:

Moderators have time to police threads for "foul language" but there isn't time to look at sales threads?

If the rules change then those things become rules. Make it a rule to leave prices up and forbid paypal gift. Voila those are now the rules and people have to abide by them. Amazing how that works. People can even use the report post feature to alert moderators to threads violating the rules! Maybe a few new low level moderators could be appointed for the sales forums to help enforce the new rules. Then the time argument holds no water.
