alright after reading some forums and doing a little research online I've assembled a list of possabilities for my next outddor knife..I've mentioned my requirements numeroustimes throughout the forum, but one more time food prep whittling, small fish and game prep mild battoning, should hold an edge and be easy to sharpen. I've also taken a look at what some other people feel are nec. in a camp knife and am trying to incorporat them blade should be between 3-5 inches long and drop point. obvioulsly full tang and shoul be at least around 3/16 thick and for me some form of stainless steal. so I've decided to run my list of contestants let it run for a week or 2 and see what the results are.

1) BM fixed griptillian
2)CS pendleton hunter aus8 3/16thick 3 1/2 in Blade length
3)coldsteel master hunter AUS8 3/16 4 1/2 in blade length
4)buck vangaurd 420 hc stainless 41/4 in blade
5)Buck woodsman 420 hc stainless blade 4 in length
6)sog field pup aus 8 4 in length
7)grohman original high carbon "german stainless" 4 in blade 1/8 thick
8) spyderco moran. VG1 stainless blade 3&1/4 in blade 1/8 thick

unless I have anything cool to report... this'll be my last thread for a while, I know I've been asking alot of questions, and I don't want to wear out my welcome....but I'll still be contributing to other peoples threads, again thanks for everything.

You've no Fallkniven F1, and no BRKT knives at all on that list.

A BRKT Gameskeeper is a good one to add. And the F1 is pretty dang sweet too.

oh yeah Falkniven, that was on my original list but I'm not sure about that laminate steel sounds gimmicky or is it the real deal??
9) fallkniven f1

No, its the real deal, One of the best out there. And all these are going to depend on you price range. If you dont want to spend alot, The bucks and field pup would work nicely. If you want to spend a little more, The fallkniven and barkriver are the way to go. The gameskeep, Huntsman and even the Northstar are all excelent knives.

Have fun :D

I'd take a Mora over any of the knives on that list, but if I had to choose from that list I'd take the Spyderco Bill Moran.

For those of you who like the Bill Moran, could you add which blade shape you would go for?

Thanks

Travis

no, Ive convinced myself ( I was told by a certain someone ;) ) that my buck will do. I've batoned, and then made fuzz sticks. Its good for me, I dont need a $200 knife to do what that one does, Anything bigger my axe will take care of.

Get yourself a Fallkniven F1, it will be one of the best knives you will ever purchase, i love mine. As for the Lam. VG-10, don't know much about it, but i thinks its supposed by stronger then normal VG-10 and Holds a better edge.

I love my F1, as well as my Scrapper 6. I recommend both strongly. As well as Ranger Knives and Ontario Rat series. On the list though, I have no experience with the Moran. So my vote would go to the Grohman or the Master Hunter. But more to the Grohman.

Grohmann is such a terrific value I have to say get the original if you have smaller hands, the #4 survival if you have larger hands.

I really like the look of the grohman' Im a little concerned about the vagueness of the steel "german highcarbon stainless" What is that how does it fair as opposed to other more familiar stainless steels....and how do thes knives hold up in the field?? The 5 1/2 inch blade of the #4 seems a little big, but the blade width of the original seems a little thin. (just thinking outloud"

Fallkniven. But does anyone know what the laminate is? Do they just fold the steel on to itself to create a layering?

from what I'm hearing laminate refers to a process in which the vg-10 steel which forms the core of the blade is surrounded with a more corrosion resistant stainless steel.. I thnk anyway

The laminate is 420 and the center of the blade is vg-10. Adds quite a bit of toughness to the blade from what I hear. Peter ran a bunch of tests before switching over to the laminate construction, and IIRC, the laminate adds 20% more lateral strength to the knife.

Although vg-10 is technically classified as stainless, it's a high-carbon stainless (that's how the laminate process works by the way, the relative amts of carbon in the different steels result in different hardnesses as the blade is heat-treated resulting in an edge much harder than the laminate) and may rust a little more right at the edge than at the rest of the blade. Took out my A1 for a couple of days and didn't really take care of it too well. There was a single spot of rust right on the edge, which came off quickly w/ some 600 grit sandpaper.

The Fallkniven forumites over on the "other" forum were very helpful with my questions when I was looking into Fallkniven and should be able to tell you more (also a great "sticky" tutorial on mousepad sharpening for the fallkniven full-convex blades over there as well).

Check out Cliff's review if you haven't already at http://www.cutleryscience.com/reviews/a1.html.
