Lee Reeves Axe?

I've never handled one but I have only seen positive comments about his axes. For example, according to Mike Steward (BRKT) he only does first class work.

Good axes. Great quality and a great guy to deal with. From what I understand the wait is pretty long right now if you order directly but there are some available on the secondary market occasionally.

I see them every now and then for sale around here. I know a few purveyors that try to grab them up when they can.

I have one and love it. Lee is someone that gets out and uses what he makes. If your on the fence I'd say don't hesitate.

I've got one of his double-bit Nessmuk hand axes and love it! It's a great little axe to pack on your belt and truck through the woods with. If you can stand the wait, you'll be happy with the end product.

I bought one off of e,b.a,y a few weeks ago. It is just a single bit with the curly maple handle. it is used and the person I got it from said her husband bought it in the early nineties for deer hunting trips it is only about 11 1/2 inches long. the handle is still tight and the head isn't beat up, no dings. I have showed it to a few "knife" friends and they all love the handle, it is stunning. I collect hatchets and I bought it because it was a good bargain for me. It need a sharpening touch up but its over 15years old.

If you can afford one and want one, sure. but I also have GF, Wetterlings, Keenkutter, Norlund and several others. Some $2 some $20, some$100+. They all work good.

I wouldn't break myself to get one, but if you want a small double bit axe, even the older ones are getting higher and higher.

Quality and Beauty can be found in the Reeves. Pat

PS I would like a lesson on how to make his handles they fit the hand very nicely.

I have one also that is Oak and contoured to fit your hand. You need to check out the double bits where he makes one side thicker for rough work and the other thinner for that nice slicing work. His handle work is out of this world.

Thanks for all the replies. I just got home and my first Lee Reeves axe had arrived in the mail. It really is beautiful and all the comments about the handle are accurate. I am giving it to a very good friend as a retirement gift. I have another one on order for me that should be here in two weeks.
Thanks again.

Where are you ordering them with a two week delivery? I just ordered one from Lee and got an email back saying "Thanks. I'll get back with you in about a year." Ha ha!

I ordered mine 16 months ago. I'm just now getting excited because the 1st one was just delivered and second on is on its way.:)

rlcanon,

I Googled Lee's name and saw one dealer who had a couple available at about $100 over Lee's price. Sorry I didn't retain the dealer's name because I don't need one badly enough to pay the extra $100. However, you may be able to turn up that dealer with the same search.

rlcanon, if you are interested in one of Lee's axes drop me an e-mail. I don't have any that I'm willing to sell but I know a few purveyors who regularly stock Lee's axes. I can check with them to see what they have. I don't know what kind of mark up they put on his stuff though. It's been so long since I bought mine from Lee that I don't even know what he is getting for them now.

Thanks for the options, guys! At $100 markup I think I'll use this as a lesson in patience. (Four days and counting! Ha ha!)

Lee's axes are superb. I gave my wife one to use in the yard but it's never been touched. She's got every instrument of destruction in use but not this. I didn't even tell her how much it cost. LOL

I was talking to a friend last night who I recommended to get one. He told me he's used it extensively on game from Mule Deer to Bison. He said it is an amazingly well made tool.

I didn't want to say anything because I thought there was a forum rule against EBay references (maybe it applies only to links? I don't recall.). In any event, I eventually got the Bocote axe. May have overpaid slightly but what the heck, I made a nice trade on Rio Doce Steel when the market bounced yesterday.

You don't have to pay up front and Reeves has a 1 year wait.

If you are interested get on his list and save yourself some cash instead of supporting profiteers who are #1 Jacking up the price and #2 getting in line ahead of people who really WANT one in order to resell.
