I was thinking about ordering one of these double bit axes by Lee Reeves. Does anyone have experience with them? Thanks

I have one with osage orange handle. Very well finished. It took about 14 months to get. Head is a little smaller and lighter than I envisoned. You need to use it more like a hawk than a hatchet. I got mine made with a thin side and a thicker side. I would probably get both made thin if I were to do it again. The head is a little light for the thicker side to get good penetration and since it is double bit ax, you can't baton it. Anyway a very nice piece of gear.

Thanks for the info guys. Going with 2 thin edges sounds like it might be a good idea. I was thinking of specing it with 2-4" extra handle length.

Thanks again.

I can vouch for the quality of the build. It was definitely worth the wait. It's a VERY well made axe that would be a great performer. However, mine hasn't made it past the admiration phase. I've got a quiver of user choppers, so this one has been a shelf queen. :o

Wow that is a nice one. Is that a walnut handle?

I think his axes are expertly made, although I prefer the single to the double.

Every axe I have seen made by Lee Reeves has been a beautiful work of art. Here is mine and I love it.

I have found it to be a great light pack axe and once I got past the cradling stage, I found this to be a dependable blade. Btw Jeff, you have nice taste in steel!

I have a single bit. everything of Reeves I have seen is outstanding. And when you get a hold of one you will be amazed at how comfortable the grip of the handle is. I saw mine a year or so ago on ek bay with a buy it now, and I snagged it up, didn't have to wait a year.

I have both the single and double. I absolutely love both and they are users. I have been using them for nearly two years. I rarely will spot one on the bay, and they sold for a high price. I had the Sear's grind done on the double and like the option. They do not have to be returned to him for handle replacement. I bought spares with my original order. The sheaths are impecable, as are the hatchets.

I have one with a bocote haft and one with the really pretty curly maple. I use both of them regularly around the ranch/farm to trim smaller limbs that get started on my trees. They hold a good edge.

I found that if I grip the axe at the very end of the handle, the flared end causes me a blister. Choking up about an inch solves that problem.

Lee is a great guy to deal with.
