Leek EDC Question

i used to carry a leek for a while, i never had it open on my and i carried it a while without the lock on with no problems, and then i carried it with the lock on just cause it made me feel better.

When I knew where my leek was I used to carry it tip up with out the lock and the blade resting against the pocket seam. I never had a problem with it accidentally opening in my pocket and I carried it daily for a few months. I was even dumb enough to play football with my friends once for a couple hours before I remembered to take it out of my pocket, and it didnt even bite me then.

Lock off, tip up - no problems.

I would recommend not removing the lock, I found it appropriate if it was carried loose somewhere and not clipped to a pocket, or prevents people unfamiliar with AO knives from cutting themselves/dropping the knife.

Any experience with a non-locked AO knife trying to open in your pocket?
I bought my first Leek 6-7 years ago, and have bought a couple more since then (including the composite model you have) and have carried them frequently in that time. I've never had one open in my pocket and consider the lock more an annoyance than a benefit. ;)

I carried one for months, and I removed the lock right after I got it. I don't think with normal use that one would just open up in your pocket. It takes a deliberate push on the blade to get the AO to join in.

I carry my leek tip down and it popped open twice in the first few weeks of having it. Wasn't doing anything crazy or anything, just the act of sitting down and standing up would cause it.

First time it got my finger, second time it got my leg. Now I always use the lock.

I found that after a little practice I'm able to quickly disengage the lock with my pinky finger just before pressing the flipper, this allows for a relatively fast one handed opening.

Wouldn't it be easier to just switch the clip to tip-up? :)

So, right now the opinions are running roughly 16-no lock and 7-lock. I suppose if I carry it with the lock off in the months that end with "R", I should be ok!;) It wouldn't be a big deal to me, but it always seems I end up with something to cut in one hand and only one more hand to extract and open my knife.:p I guess in the back of my mind I think of a one-handed knife as being just that. I've had a rainbow Boa for years I've carried very little for that reason. Didn't want to disengage the lock each time, and it was easy to access. Either way, I know the Leek will be a great knife to carry. Thanks for the input!

haha ....I had no reason to assume that would make it any safer, but maybe I'll give it a try.

I don't carry a Leek but I figured that whole spine against theback of the pocket thing makes good sense. I carry a small fixed blade, usually an Izula or sometimes my BM 710. :)

I carry my Leek with the lock OFF and tip down position in RFP. I keep it that way cause my Blackout which i've carried for 7 years now is that way and cannot be adjusted. Familiarity I guess. Anyhow, I was about to say that it has never happened to me either, Buuutt just now as I was fidgeting with my Blackout while reading this thread it opened!! So i'm sitting down and wondering how did that just happen! Trying to renact what happened i managed to do it again. I'm sitting down and wearing jeans, as I pushed the knife back into my pocket the thumbstud snagged on a fold near the small pocket above the regular pocket which caused the blade to open just a bit. Krazy huh! i dont think that would happen standing up as there would be no fold in my pants, and its the first time its happened sitting down. Still dont see how i would cut myself tip down. If I put my hand in my pocket it would hit the spine of the blade not the sharpened edge. I guess if I jammed my hand all the way down my pocket I could catch the point

I took my safety out of the knife. I carry it tip down and haven't had problems.

Leek clipped tip up resting against edge of RFP = never had a problem
Leek loosely in RFP = never had a problem
Leek loosely in watch pocket = never had a problem

I've never used the lock. I personally consider it unnecessary.

I carry a scallion quite abit but it can only be carried tip down. I tightened the lock and I don't use the lock but I've never had it open on me.

seems like that takes away any advantage of having the assisted opening in the first place? lock makes sense if you have to throw it in a bag or something, though.

got my first leek recently, takes a substantial nudge to get over the initial closed position, couldn't see it opening up accidentally except in dire situations.

fun to play with, don't like it for carry. probably give it as a gift.

I've never had any issues with my composite Leek accidentally opening on me. I actually have the opposite issue at the moment... I guess, through use, I've gunked up the mechanism to the point the assisted opening doesn't hardly work at all. I wish the torx bit on it was a little bigger. I'm having issues finding the right size to take it apart to clean it.

your local hardware store should have a set. Mine had the driver handle with a set of the small torx for maybe 6 bucks or so.
