Hello All,

I am having some hard luck. I have two Leeson Speedmaster motor controllers wired to 220V DC motors. They worked in Boston, then California, then Korea. Then, one day, after someone moved them across the shop, they both start blowing fuses everytime I turn them on. They will not work, and the fuses really BLOW when I turn them on.

They are in different 220 outlets now, but I have plugged in an Evenheat oven and it does fine in the outlets.

I am at a total loss and would really appreciate any help/suggestions anyone can offer.

Thanks,

John

Sounds to me like you have a short somewhere. I have no idea what you mean by "moved", but if it involved rewiring (lengthening or rerouting the cables) or remounting the box, I'd first look at those two things to see if there's not some problem.

Perhaps a strain relief has cut the insulation on one of the wires, or a bolt that mounts the box was too long and makes contact with the board inside, who knows?

Unplug it and start checking for continuity where there ain't s'posed to be any continuity. :D

Doc.

Thank you. I'll do just that.

By moved, I mean simply motor and controller unbolted, moved, and remounted somewhere else. The wiring was not (deliberately) messed with.

do these motor controllers have dust-proof enclosures? If they do not, you may have some conductive dust inside that is moving around. With the power off, try blowing them out with compressed air.

I've got a Leeson Controller on my Bader BIII, and I'm on my third circuit board. Sometimes, they just need to be replaced.
Mine did the same thing. Just started blwoing fuses.
Take it to an electrical motor repair and have it tested.
It's a bummer, I know.

Check the brushes in your motors when they start to wear down past a critical point you will start popping fuses. Also if the motors got bumped around in the move the dust from the brushes can get on the arpeture and cause a bad contact. Blow the motor out but don't breath the dust it is really nasty.
