hi im coming to california for a visit soon and i was wondering if the dragonfly was legal to edc there .. im in queensland australia and nothing is legal to carry unless reasonable excuse ie fishing knife while fishing .. thanks i just love them spydies and wondered which ones are ok

Dragonfly? YES, it is legal.

I am not aware of any Spydercos that are outright illegal in California.

Double edge is illegal. push daggers are illegal.

A knife disguised to look like something else is illegal.
e.g. lipstick knives (probably not an issue to you).

I believe belt buckle knives are illegal.

Morimotom can probably give you a more detailed answer.

But your dragonfly? no problem.

Rules of thumb in California:

Open carry of fixed blades is okay. Concealed carry is not.

Folding knives are okay, no size limit, open or concealed.

Autos under 3" are okay.

Check the local municipal codes for where you are going to be. For instance, in Los Angeles, no open or concealed carry of fixed blades of any size, and open carry of folders (like in a belt pouch) is a no no. Concealed carry of folders is still okay.

CA general laws are pretty nice and simple, but it seems County Laws vary a lot and change often. It would be nice to know where you are headed so we can make sure that you won't run into carry problems. Possession shouldn't be an issue.

just to let you know, as long as you don't look or act "suspicious", cops shouldn't search you and you should be able to carry whatever you want. (don't blame me if you do actually get arrested for carrying something illegal ;)

enjoy your stay in ca.

Make the most of your visit, Sastrugi, and carry two!! Hope you have a great time.

Add butterfly knives to the banned list in Kalifornia. And the blade limit on autos is 2". Other than that, any folder is fine unless you are in a place like LA that has stricter regulations. As has been said, if you don't do anything stupid then law enforcement will leave you alone. Fixed blades of any size must be worn openly.

thanks guys ill be flyng in on the 6th sept for wandering up and down the west coast into oregon and washington for a couple months maybe even over to canada .. no butterflies or autos allowed here but i do know from lurking awhile that california seemed to have some issues so i thought id ask

as already mentioned, it is not so much ca laws that are an issue.

municipal and county codes will get you in trouble, though.

los angeles is very strict, as are most socal cities. pretty sure san francisco laws are the same.

I have been stopped, at least twice in California where I live, with pocket knives on me. they search people fairly readily, and the fact that I was carrying a knife came out both times. in both instances they weren't happy about it, but they gave them back.

I wouldn't carry anything over 3 1/2 inches although you might be able to get away with more.

I usually carry concealed, plan untucked shirt. but visible would probably be better.

The laws are kind of strange, and almost anything can be considered a gravity knife. being able to be open with a flick of the wrist. so there is a lot of ambiguity.

If you are stopped, you may be asked if you have a weapon. if you say yes I have a knife. things will not go well it least it will be handing them a good excuse to get away from you.

you should take the time to say no, I do have a little pocket knife here, obviously let them take it, they will almost certainly get the back.

You should have no problems carrying the Dragonfly. However, be aware that any government building, amusement park, zoo, concert, pro sporting event, etc., will most likely ban any kind of knife regardless of size (even tiny SAKs).

where is the push dagger illegal? the CS Safekeeper III has only a single edge, does that make it not a dagger?

also- where does it say concealed fixed blades are illegal?

It's on my other computer, but there's a site in CADOJ that explains the knife laws.
Might be an idea for links to all different states to be posted in a specific area. Someone from each state could post the link. Then they could be referenced by all.
Just a thought...

Here is the link:

Check the box for penal code, and use whatever search term you want - knife, blade, etc.

Actually that sounds right.

In relation to the previous answer

So if i would bring a Endura 4 Waved it would be ok?? If not carried at events/festivals city regulations etc.

It is not an auto but concidered the blade length vertio opening 'helper device' that would not be a problem??
