Legendary Boker Quality, what a joke

I always thought Boker was a white label brand..putting their name on generic knives. I guess I was wrong but I can't shake the feeling.

A lot of old knife companies fell by the wayside. Some of those sold their name to others who then put out a greatly inferior product. Case kept making knives themselves, but the quality became spotty.
Boker took an approach I kinda like. They split into Boker, Boker+, and Boker Magnum and have three different "levels" of knife.
Kinda reminds me of some musicians who, instead of "selling out" completely, would put one or two pop songs on new albums instead of going completely to pap. Pap for the masses while still producing some good stuff for old fans.
I'm looking at you Grover Washington Junior and Bonnie Rait.

Over the past several years I've looked at many different Boker Tree Brand knives and found their quality to be about like Case. You really have to examine the individual knife you are thinking of purchasing to make sure it is OK.

Around 1950 my Dad was stationed in Germany (Army) and he got hooked on Boker knives for their traditional American designs (no doubt because there were so many Americans there!) but also for their excellent build quality. He had and gave away dozens.

So I look at them at the gun shows every time I go to replace the best stockman I ever owned late 60s/early 70s. A big Boker Tree stockman my Dad gave me.

The Boker Tree knives I have looked at for many years now all seem to suffer from quality control. Gritty and dirty blades, blades that rub one another, have run into a couple that needed pliers to open one of the blades, etc. Pretty disappointing, but I guess par for the course on all traditional brands these days.

No doubt there are good specimens out there, just make sure you can pick the one you want.

Thinking about buying a Boker Tree Brand Folding Hunter. Anyone of you guys that own one have any issues with this knife??

Stick with the Solingen made (or Argentinian made Arbolito) line and you’ll likely end up up with a beautifully made knife. With the Magnum and Plus lines, it’s pretty much a crapshoot.

I do not know what you paid for it, but after a week of use on my farm, it would have rust and dings and then I would have cleaned it up nicely. Lather, rinse, repeat.

This is Boker+, but not very cheap one:

I was gonna come in and talk about the poor fit and finish (along with poor/no HT) I have had on a few Bokers, but I'm glad I read through the post first. It would seem I failed to do my research before buying, as all the failures were Boker+

the only boker I'd consider is the barlow line... I appreciate they use some nice wood (& micarta which is nice if you want max durability with a comfy grip)

but I have not bought one... these tend to use n690 steel which should be a notch better than 440c
if I could be assured the curly birch looked this good on all of them, I'd get one

Their micarta is usually pretty nice too

I would stick with Tree Brand if you are this concerned with quality and finish. Those have been pretty nice, in my experience. Boker Plus typically (not always) means, "We had China do it."

Can’t even trust “tree brand” or “Germany” on a Böker. If you want to be 100% certain it’s made in Germany and sure to be a quality knife, look for the word “Solingen”, specifically.

Plenty of the Tree Brand marked knives are made in China.

That's a boker plus, not one of their premium Solingen Boker line of knives. I own a Boker Plus folder and it's nowhere near the quality of my Solingen Boker knives.
If you want a premium level Boker, buy one of their Solingen Traditionals.

only problem with that one is the bolsters are way oversized... I'd prefer none or small...

check this one out - it's a mini fixed blade 2 & 3/4" - d2 and micarta and it's only around 60

Looks like a half decent little skinning knife, for only 60 you cant go wrong trying it out.
