I have an old Legitimus Collins 1944 MK2 machete that I've had for years. Back when I was quite a bit younger and and a little less stupid, I ruined the blade by putting it in a campfire just to watch it get red hot, probably several times. I could kick myself now for doing that, but I'm curious if anyone knows what type of steel these were made from so that I could possibly try heat treating it again? Or if this is even possible or worth the effort? It's an awesome tool that I'd like to try and revive.

More than likely it was 1095. Should be fairly straightforward to heat treat by any local heat treating shop.

More likely 1055 or 5160. Machetes are impact blades. Mid range carbon content is ideal.

Unless you have an emotional attachment to the blade, you'd be better off buying a new one than trying to re-heat treat the blade.
