"Lemme borrow yer knife"

i love it when someone loans out their razor edge knife to a person that just wants to cut open a box. seems like they always hit that big copper staple in some boxes & chip the edge.

I let someone borrow one just today. He wanted to peel an orange. I happen to carry a spare in my bag.

If they don't have their own knife, I can't trust them with mine. The answer is always no, or something more rude.

depends on what i carry and who is asking.

i don't bother asking why they need it if i can trust the guy it's alright, i won't even complain if someone i trusted damage the knife, i trusted him ... i just won't anymore.

some knives just won't ever other hands than mine.

I generally respond with "Sure, but DON'T BREAK IT." I really don't mind people using my knives, just so long as they don't use them as prybars or screwdrivers.

A buddy of mine asked if he could borrow my knife last week, come to think of it...
"Can I borrow your knife?"
"Sure, just don't break it."
"Is it sharp?"
"Of course!"

I hand it to him and he uses it to cut open a nice big, nasty blister on his hand. Doesn't even wipe it off and hands it back to me. :barf:

Oh, well...at least he didn't abuse it or anything! A little bodily fluid here and there won't hurt the blade. I just made damn sure to wash it before I used it to cut open an orange or something :p

Thats what my EDC Spyderco Tenacious is for. If I was carrying anything else in my collection it would be due to the circumstances and I would not be in a situation to loan it.

My RAT-1 was cheap, but I really like the knife and don't want someone to wreck it doing something stupid. I really don't have any knives that I just plain don't care about.

this is why we have been blessed with the Mora line of knives.

If I have a slip joint or fixed blade I will loan it without question, But most of my folders that lock in whatever fashion (linerlock, framelock,Manix 2) seem to confuse even a Rocket Scientist. And right away I always tell them "Dont run your thumb down the blade" . Something that seems to be in peoples DNA for some reason.

My usual response is "Why?". The average person does not seem to understand what a knife is to be used for. They assume it's everything from a screwdriver to a pry bar; everything except a precison cutting tool.

I generally don't let anyone use my knife. They should have come prepared. I also don't let people use my knife becuase I'm not confident that they can safely do so. I don't want to be responsible for them injuring themselves or someone else. I know people that can't be trusted to walk and chew gum at the same time. I'm certainly not going to let them play with one of my razor sharp knives!

I also like my Mora knives too much to be happy with someone wrecking them. I have a bunch of knives, but none that I want messed up. I say: let them break their own knives!

You have a point. :D

But then it would take them out of the gene pool before they can reproduce if they really mess up. ROFL

For me it depends on what I am carrying that day, if the knife is one of my tougher ones then I don't have a problem lending it out.

While I'm pretty sure that a stranger, looking at me, would possibly guess I have a knife but none ever seem to ask me if they could use it. At work there are a few who occasionally ask but it's a Bio-Med shop with plenty of tools, I know it's to cut bread or some type of food as we all have box cutters and screwdrivers. I keep a bread knife and an old Japanese Sushi knife in the drawer of my coffee stand, the Sushi knife has a pit in it's edge, I don't know how that happened.

My friends carry their own, family will ask for my knife from time to time, I'll ask for what and pull the best suited blade, usually the corkscrew, for them to use. I carry a SAK along with one or two knives that are way too sharp for non-knifers.
