Hi all,
few days ago I received a package from Finland. It was from the knifemaker Saku Honkilahti, and – of course – a knife was in there: the Lemminkainen MSP (Micarta Survival Puukko)

The Lemminkainen MSP is a “survival puukko”: me and Saku collaborate to designing it, mixing the efficiency of a traditional puukko and the toughness and features of a survival knife.
So, the handle is made in micarta, is shaped for to be comfortable in each situation and with gloves too, and has a lanyard hole

In order to ensure a better toughness of the whole knife, the tang is oversized, and molded with the pommel

We decided to provide the Lemminkainen a small but effective ventral guard, to guarantee more safety as possible without reducing the efficiency of the knife with an intrusive ventral guard

The blade has a razor sharp scandi profile, it’s 100 mm long and 5,0 mm thick

More, on the spine of the blade there is a dedicated place to use effectively a fire-steel

The Lemminkainen MSP has a beautiful, comfortable Finnish traditional leather sheath, handmade by S. Honkilahti too

We choose a green micarta for the handle, not just because it’s beautiful, but also to ensure a “camo” feature if we want to be concealed in the woods. Otherwise, if you lost or forgot the knife in the greenery it’s really hard to see it, so you may put an orange “tail” to my Lemminkainen MSP, this way it’s easier to find him also on the wood’s floor

Handling this knife it’s a pleasure, the micarta provide a smooth grip which feel like silk in the hands, the rounded handle has not rough points so you may manage it for hours without hot spots, the tiny ventral guard provide a sense of safety

Let’s try the cutting efficiency of the Lemminkainen MSP. I need a walking stick

No problem, the Lemmy MSP it’s doing the job quickly, effectively, in few words it’s hard to ask mora of a knife.

Let’s try the knife on a tent peg now

Easily done, great.

Finally, let’s try the fire-steel dedicate place on the blade spine

A spark’s cascade using the mini firesteel, I’m really satisfied.

Conclusions: the Lemminkainen MSP it’s a great all-around knife, I found it nearly perfect for my needs in the woods. It’s light but robust, has a great cutting efficiency, an incredibly comfortable handle, it’s easy to carry, and has several interesting features that helps a lot in the woods. I can’t honestly found any issues with him. I’m very happy about the collaboration with S. Honkilahti, the Lemminkainen it’s just a great knife, so again thanks a lot Saku!

Cheers, Alfredo

Superb!

I was actually wondering when you'd show us this one. That is one well-made and enviable puuko you have there signor!

(Thread subscribed too as well!)

That's my idea, of a scandi-grind, nice and high. I really like that fixed blade, and your explorer 2 is nice as well, I like NATO straps.

Gorgeous knife. I really like the Micarta and the flat spot on the spine for the fire steel. Micarta is my all time favorite handle material, and it looks like a great cutter!

Very nice combination of old school and more modern materials! It's a real beauty.

On a zero grind scandi the height is dictated by not just the angle but the blade thicknesss. This blade is thicker than most scandis at .157" (4mm): so for a given angle grind, the grind line will come higher up the sides than on a model with say .100" (2.5mm) thickness. Hope that makes sense.

Beautiful knife! It looks like it does very well. I think I'd want a little less belly, a little more point, and would prefer to forego the ferro rod striker in the spine, but the grind looks good, and DAMN I love that handle and pommel! Thanks for posting it up
