Lengthwise grinding, plunge grinding, compound curvature platen. Very cool.

You would need the reversible motor to get the full benefit with a flatbed grinder, I would think.
I'm looking to get a horizontal grinder........I think I might need one of your super cool platens for it......and maybe a reversible motor :D

Nathan, what grit belt did you use for the final finish on that blade?

Speaking of reversible motors. Could someone explain why a grinder like the KMG does not track well in reverse? Would a rubber contact wheel as the drive wheel help this out?

Seems like, flipping a grinder on its side is easy.

Don't forget modest, Nathan!! :p

You can sell a boat load of those. A quick and easy way to "hand-rub" hollows? That right there sells itself.

And good looking too... ...as far as you know...

I'm afraid these don't lend themselves to production very well because the large combination of primary diameters and plunge radius combinations prevents me from making a bunch and putting them on the shelf. They would need to be made to order, one at a time. That, and these can not be machined directly via conventional machining, they require surface milling with a ballnose endmill which is expensive compared to "regular" machining because of extended spindle time and tooling consumption. So I can't just make these when I get open machine time and stick them on the shelf, their production would fall into "real" shop time and my real shop rate and lead times. If anybody is seriously interested send me a PM and I can quote it, but I don't envision many people wanting to spend the coin for something like this.

That said, I think this is something that many people here could make for themselves. If you have the skill to properly grind a knife you probably have the skill you need to make your own plunge grinding platen. You need to approach it with a plan, and that plan should include accurate radius templates, but I believe the construction of something like this is within the abilities of many of the makers here.

Why?

-Peter

Too thick and not flexible enough, it wouldn't fit in the plunge or the hollow and it tried to wash out my grind.

In retrospect perhaps I should have put the scotchbrite on the 10" wheel and left the grinder off and gave it a few pulls across the belt.

Well, I use a 10" wheel and if I had a grinder that went horizontal I would tell you to quit giggling long enough and make me one of those !!! You surte are mean, flaunting such developments in front of us after doing such great work on the platens for us, and then telling us no to this new development unless we have a bag full of money to spend ! I think I will go to bed and cry myself to sleep. Frank

I am mean and I'm sorry. A person can't help being evil, we're born this way.

I have a policy against taking payment for something that isn't ready to ship, which keeps me out of hot water. I also have a policy against doing one-off custom work without prepayment, which keeps me from tracking people down and murdering them in their sleep.

However, given the response this thread has received I am willing to give this a try. I swear this was not my intention when starting this thread.

I have started a very short run sales thread in the appropriate forum as an experiment to see if this is feasible going forward. We'll see how smooth it goes.

Nathan, have you considered teaching a business ethics class? Or maybe writing a book? I wish to subsribe to your newsletter.

Hey there evil genius, I can't find you inquiry on this vertical grinding platen. Maybe you could please list it in the for sale stuff. I might get one but would need a cooler as well. Are you going to see high chairs as well, or do you recommend use of a 3 step stool? Frank
