LEO's, what are you carrying?

i always have an emerson kerambit support side.

my "utility" folder is rotated. i have a few emersons (7, 8, 13, persian), hinderer xm18, strider sng, and spydercos (military, police) that all get carry time. i like the hinderer the best, but its kinda pricey, so mostly carry it off duty.

I would think that cops would just use knives for small utility stuff since they have a gun.
It does generally fill a utility role the same as civilians. It is also a back up weapon for when the LEO's gun is lost, jammed, stolen or out of ammo.

Some deparments these days also teach the use of a knife for use in weapons retention (clamp onto the gun with your strong hand, and attack the opponent with the knife in your weak hand to get him to let go).

My fathers a LEO of about 22 years and in order to buy his love I’ve given him a number of knives over the years.

Fathers day morning a CMP-D2 Paramilitary is going to be added to his rotation.

Other knives I’ve given him that get carry time are:

Native
Endura
Cara Cara G10
CS Recon I
BM Ambush
Full sized Grip
mini grip

Having been/am an Instructor, that is so true. I was just saying the EDU needs of it.

I usually had a FB on my weak side for weapon retention, but it also depends on Dept. policy. In fact, that is main "law" that Officers need/should follow (I'm not saying they don't, just saying for others that that's what defines what they can & can not use/carry).

A larger folder with a longer blade is just more useful & while I never carried a Police model, it's relatively thin for its size, which is probably why it's so popular. I know I'd probably carry one if I needed one nowadays.

I've carried this Gerber 3.50 every day, on-duty and off, for the past several years. It doesn't rust, holds a decent edge, and it's inexpensive enough that I don't worry about losing it. If I work on patrol I also carry a Leatherman super tool on my duty belt.

anyway, I love the way your military shows its wear. the military is a great knife and I hope it continues to serve you well.

Just curious what you mean because if he would have said it was brand new I would believe him? It doesn't appear to have any wear at all.

We had a Deputy here use a knife on a suspect to retain their weapon when the suspect was going for a gun grab. Knives are invaluable for all sort is uses. They can save your life.

Find lots of snakes in the Bay area?

Yep, we had a couple of gopher snakes on our driveway a couple of weeks ago. Saw a King snake last week while out walking. See rattlers every now and then on the road while I'm out walking.

Since a colubrid is a type of snake, I have to inquire. Why do you ask; are you looking for love? :D

Off The subject but, MR SMITH , That is the very thing is was getting at in my post. Lots of cops have used their blades to prevent some sh-t bag from getting their "up front". I too have worked with an old Robbery and Homicide Det. who used his knife to stop a felon who wanted to do a little "Light Shooting" with his sig 220. They went to the ground and the sh-t bag went for the gun. A few stab wounds to his shoulder, arm, and side changed his mind. Let me tell ya, that old cop was one tough dude. He was no youngster but he sure could handle himself. The sh-t bag perp lived but I bet he thinks twice before he goes to borrow a cop's gun again. Now he's some inmate's girlfriend for the next 15 yrs.

I'd appreciate it if the LEOs who participate here would use their better conscience to talk to their fellow officers about knives as tools that GOOD PEOPLE carry... and to avoid the predetermined BS theory that anyone with a knife is a threat. The truth is... anyone with an imagination or knowledge of improvisation could be a threat. Perhaps offensive brandishing is a threat... LAW does not magically cause threat. They way things COULD be headed, good people could be considered a threat for no reason other than potential...

EVERY PERSON here could be a criminal having never acted against humankind in any way.
Always has to be somebody...:jerkit:

Archieblue, most police officers are not out to give good folks a hard time. BUT...cops have to assume that anyone withing 21 ft that has an edged weapon can be an immediate threat. Not all "bad guys" give you visiual cues before they go ape sh-t on you. That being said you , as a member of the public, must understand if a cop has to secure your knife (take it from you temporarily) while dealing with you for whatever reason. You will get it back once the interview is over. That is if you were not in violation of say a city ordinance stipulating that you can't carry a knife in a certain place or something. I can tell you this much, most cops will not give a crap if they see you walking down the street minding your own business with your knife clipped to the inside of your pocket--where legal to do so of course. Remember the old saying, "If ya ain't doin' nothing wrong , ya got nothing to worry about". Best.

You are a good son!

While on and off duty, I always carry the same knife and pistol combination. Spyderco Chinook 3 and a Glock 21 SF. Always have a Buck Hartsook in my shirt pocket as well.

Thank you p_mcmanis! Of the three it's close between the Military and the 615, but the 615 is my favorite due to the drop point blade and butter smooth Axis lock! Both of them have incredible to me heat treated S30V steel!

What makes the Spydie Police good for LEOs? Is it the reach?

I could be wrong, but I think it's the slimness of the handle.
It practically melts into your pocket.:)
Also the only knife I find comfortable for IWB carry.
They have to carry plenty of other crap, so a slim knife makes sense.
As for having a nice length of blade, why wouldn't they want as much usable blade as possible(within reason)? always better to have a tad more than is absolutely required.
