The Les Baer/Busse 1911 is the .45 that I would like to buy. But, since it is a little out of my price range and the availability is very limited, I need to decide on another pistol. I want a full size mainly for range use and home defense. It should be smoothed out for occasional concealed carry

I am definately interested in a .45. The problem I am having is that I am torn between afew different manufacturers. They are Colt, Wilson Combat, Kimber, Springfield, and Rock River Arms (These are not in any specific order.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I carry the Kimber CDP II and love it....... only gripe is it doesn't like the cheap ammo........ too dirty and the tolerances on the kimber tend to cause feeding probs......... I shoot Hornady TAP or Spear Gold Dots and never have had a prob with either. My next .45 will be Rock River....... heard great things about them!

If you must have a .45, I'd get a SIG P220. In fact, I've got a SIG P220, and I prefer it in pretty much every way over the 1911s I've owned. You should be able to pick up a good-as-new factory reconditioned CPO (certified pre-owned) model for under $500.

But for carry, I'd go for a P229 in .40. In fact, on those rare occasions where I feel the urge to carry something bigger than a Kel-Tec P3AT, that's what I carry.

If you've got your heart set on a 1911, my Kimber Ultra-Carry hasn't given me anything to complain about.

I also have the Sig 220...... it was my duty carry when I was still a cop....... great weapon and I can say that after over 5,000 rounds and not one malfunction it would be the one I went for in an aw S#!T situation. Cheap ammo... good ammo..... $1.75 a round ammo........ it will eat em all!

Go with Wilson Combat:thumbup:

I've also heard good things about Night Hawk

And you should be able to find a Les Baer for less than the Busse Model

The sigs are nice if you like DA/SA or DAO actions and don't have small hands. 1911's are my pick. I have never had a Colt or Rock River Arms, but I have a couple of Baers and had one Wilson (traded it for a Baer). I also had one of the first Springfield Armory "Loaded" pistols when they first started them. It was a pretty good gun for the cash, but it had some sharp cocking serrations. I actually cut my fingers one them! My advice is look for some Gun Test magazines with 1911 features and go from there. Those guys are pretty objective.

I just checked their website after posting and thought I'd add the link. It looks like they are going to print an article just for the topic. :D

Dan Wesson makes a new 1911 in 45ACP, Bobtailed commander thats real slick, Think I paid $829 for mine. Alot of quality for the $$

Ive got a Springfield Loaded MC Op and love it, awesome fit to my hands and more accurate than I am. That said I've handled Nighthawks on multiple occasions and they are SWEET (but $2,500 price tags). That said I'd probably go with Springfield as I think they're one of the best production 1911's on the market and have awesome warranties.

Thanks guys, I knew if I had a question about booze, blades, or guns, this is the place I could get some answers!!!:D

I have a SIG and a Colt Gold Cup (1911) that has been worked on a little.

The SIG is a great weapon but the 1911 is ten times more fun to shoot. If I was a law enforcement officer I carry the SIG, as it is I shoot the 1911 way more.

You can't go wrong with any of the aforementioned pistols but I'll place my vote for Springfield. I'll also add that I have quite a few 1911's and generally pack a 220 Sig.

If you have the dough, and are willing to spend it, I would get a Nighthawk.

You really get a lot of pistol for the money. They have a lot of nice touches that put them above the others in the same price range.

For example a Wilson CQB and Nighthawk GRP cost about the same +-$40. But with the Nighthawk you are getting a Novak Extreme Duty Adj nite sight plus a lanyard loop MSH so you are getting more for your money with the Nighthawk.

Wilsons sights are Novak clones.

So many choices... so little cash

I have several 1911 pistols... Colt, 1st gen Kimber, Knighthawk and a nice Nowlin 9x23... all are great pistols. I'd say try a couple if you can, look for the features you feel you 'must have' and then get what you can. Each have their own merits, but I carry my NH Talon and Nowlin an aweful lot and love both.

Here's my Talon I

Oh, I also have, and love, my Sig P220, but for my best shooting it's hard to beat the single action trigger of John Browning's greatest (in my opinion) design.

Check out the Glock 21 (13 rounds + 1 in the pipe) and it is totally reliable. Light for its size, and eats all ammo. You won't break the bank either. I've been carrying mine for years and have never had a malfuntion, or failure to feed any type of 45 ammo. I've had this pistol packed in snow, dirty (from a 2500 round Combat Course), and in the desert for an extended period of time. And never had it malfuntion. My 2 cents.

BOBO... I think the G21 is a GREAT firearm, however I think that one must handle it to see how it fits. I have owned a couple 21s and just couldn't get comfortable w/it as a carry gun. To G21 is too fat and I have big enough mits. It's just not as comfortable for me (this is my opinion) versus the 1911 frame.

To me, that is why I'd always recommend that whoever is buying the gun try a couple before making that purchase.
