I was sad to hear of his passing and it got me to wondering if any classic bm knives were designed by him? I know he was was a great businessman but dont know how involved in the design department he was. Thanks

I believe the Weehawk blade on their Bali-songs was his design. The company started as Bali-Song and Pacific Cutlery Company, and Les handmade most of those early knives. He was a smart businessman for sure, but he was a knifemaker first.

I always heard about someone named les at benchmade. However you couldn't prove it by me. Saw someone they called les at a show...
However all my voice mails to someone named les (never more than one in a 3 day period) and even registered mail to this elusive person named les have all gone unanswered! CS

"...late 1970s, Les—who attended USC—went to work with a machine shop to create the best product possible right here in the U.S....Looking to sell his new knife, Les took his Bali-Song into a local outdoor shop and the shop owner asked for 100 more. Thus Bali-Song Inc. was born...

"... Les incorporated as Bali-Song®, Inc...
began building handmade custom Bali-Songs, along with Jody Samson, who ground all the blades. .."

kfarting, are you a straight up nut swinger or just a benchmade nut swinger??
how do you get paid for all the nut swinging you do?
Such a hypocrite.

Weren’t pretty much all the early designs Les, then they partnered with a lot of famous makers for awhile and now it’s more in house ? ZT did something similar (going more in house).

Not try to stir things up, but the truth is that the red class Vex model was basically a Sal Glesser design. Ironic that the factory soon started making clones of them...kind of amusing in a way. Long discontinued model that never did well.

I think I've got 2 of his knives. Can't be sure. But the translation from ine of the boxes translated to Les D Voice.
