The news has been out for a few days, so I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet (or I am blind and did not see the post in searches). I am bummed after reading this, since I really enjoy Les's adventures.

Living in the wild takes toll on TV's "Survivorman"

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Les Stroud, better known as TV adventurer "Survivorman," was chased by a jaguar, nearly dropped dead due to heatstroke and spent a sleepless night among lions. But now, he's tired of it all and ending his popular series about living in the wild.

Stroud is the Canadian host of the TV show "Survivorman" on the Science Channel in which he spends a week alone in the wild with little or no food and water or equipment, filming himself as he battles to survive in harsh environments.

But Stroud, 47, said he is filming his final adventure in the wild in Papua New Guinea this month which would wrap up his third and last series as Survivorman, although he expected the nickname would stick with him as he moved onto other projects.

"It takes a lot out of me as I really do what I do for real, with no camera crew, no nights in hotels like others do, and it takes a toll on my body," Stroud told Reuters.

"You can only do seven days surviving without food a certain number of times a year. I'm pleased with what I have done, I've been copied around the world, but 25 times I've not eaten anything for a week while sleeping on rocks. I need to move on."

Stroud, who has just released a book called "Survive! - Essential Skills and Tactics to Get You Out of Anywhere - Alive!," does not expect his new projects to be without risk.

He has spent more than 20 years as an outdoor adventurer and instructor in survival, teaching skills such as white water paddling, sea kayaking, hiking, and dog sledding.

"It's just what I do," he said, describing a possible new TV series in which he would follow in the footsteps of famous explorers.

Stroud was not always Survivorman, however. Back in the early 1980s, he filmed rock videos and became a producer of a Canadian music video channel.

He said it was the combination of filmmaking and outdoor experience that gave him the idea in 2000 of taking a few small cameras into the wilderness of Northern Ontario in Canada and spending a week alone without water, food, or equipment.

From this, he made two one-hour pilots for what eventually became the "Survivorman" series where he is dropped off in the wild, with a rescue crew keeping about 5 to 50 kms (3.1 to 31 miles) from him.

"I have not had to be rescued yet but there was one situation in Labrador where we had bad weather and we all had to be shipped out to safety," said Stroud.

"I did get chased out of the jungle by a jaguar once and I had one situation in the Kalahari Desert where it came close to calling in my rescue crew as I got close to having heat stroke. It was 61 degrees Celsius. (142 degrees Fahrenheit)

"But probably my most scared was being in lion territory in Africa. That was a scary place to be."

Is he scared of much?

"Mediocrity and losing my children," he said, adding: "And I'm not good with heights although I have just got my pilot's license."

That explorer show sounds cool. I like the show, and dont think we have seen the last from Les.

Like I said on the other Les thread, I'm hoping that this is just a negotiating tactic, sorta like when Jim Rome said he was going to leave sports talk radio and magically stayed when they threw more money at him. Stroud does not really seem like the money-grubbing type, though, so I suspect that this really is the last season.

So then this is the last season.
How many episodes will be in (this) season 3?
Doesn't mean he cant still do outdoors related stuff.
Maybe he'll morph into a toque wearing Ray Mears!

the only survival show i watch

too bad hes leaving

hope he changes his mind

but it does take a lot out of a person

Man that's a bummer... I've always liked watching Survivorman rather than Man vs Wild. MvsW is just insane, if I want to watch extreme survival I could always just Rambo.

look at the bright side ..... this opens up doors for somebody to replace him.
Comments are always being made about what others would do differently if they were in his particular situation or the gear they would like to see being used.

Hey if Obama can be nominated president anything is possible :D

Who in this forum should we nominate to replace Les ????

Aye will be one less decent guy/show on TV for sure. The plus side is i'll be finishing up my CV and posting it first class to the Discovery Channel offices tomorrow. Someone has got to take up the reigns.

Anyone else fancy it? There must be at least a few on here that would give their right arm to do that job?

um, Les is being a bit modest...

it should read, "...not eaten anything for a week while sleeping on rocks and carrying around a fifty pound pack."

i'm not surprised he's calling it quits - some of his shows are really tough but most fall into the category of extremely grueling. it's amazing he keeps going out there to film again - and not surprising he only wants to do it a couple dozen times.

i'm betting those shows will be the standard by which all other survival shows are judged by for years to come. anyone else will either be "as good as Les" or not. and my guess is there's not many people who are going to step up and be prepared to do what Les has done.

after a dozen times of starving for a week and going into severe caloric deficit from packing around 50 pounds and freezing your butt off at night - well, your brain is probably going to start coming up with real strong arguments about why you don't really need to do it another dozen times. 25 Survivorman shows is an incredible achievement and not likely to be matched anytime soon. but maybe i'm wrong - no doubt there are many who would love to be the next Les!

Too bad, but I wouldn't begrudge him his choice and wanting to do something different. He is probably getting tired of the format - it was a good run while it lasted. The explorer show does sound pretty interesting to me. This would also give him a lot more material to work with, such as getting into historical debates and different accounts or unknowns about how they approached survival situations. It could be really good....Maybe he's have a Nesmuk tribute episode!

At least he didn't drag it out for the money until it got ugly and he started staying in the Motel 6.

I will miss his show but maybe he will have a gear sale, little momentos of his shows.

Wait, how did this thread get the "Leather" prefix? I could have sworn I left it blank...

In case you are wondering, no, this thread has nothing to do with leather. Except that maybe Les occasionally eats leather for its meager nutritional value...

Thats too bad..i really liked his show. I sure cant blame him and i commend him for doing it as long as he did.

I just bought his book today too and it looks real good so far!

That is sad to hear ,I really enjoy his show and my son & I enjoy sitting down together watching Survivorman....guess I will need to buy DVD set.
