Les Stroud - Off The Grid

It is a good video. Its cool how he went off the grid but still has modern conveniences. And its real life not everything happens as planned.

thanks for the link - i'd heard he was giving off-the-grid a shot, i'm psyched to see what his experience was like.

les is impressive - definitely not a weekend-warrior

Is this the deal his family did, way before Survivorman???

I believe it is. I saw it on Discovery I think a couple of months ago. Very good stuff. Les is the man. It took a while for his kids to get use to it but they did seem to cope pretty well.

I belive this was the building of his home, which has been his family's permanent residence for several years now.

I have wondered for a while if you could make a wildnerness home truly modern and yet still independent from the grid by installing either a small wind turbine, if there is such an animal or some form of very small hyrdoelectic setup using something akin to a mill wheel to drive it, along with some solar panels for hot water, etc. You could still have your satellite dish, tunes and fridge then:D

Very Cool.

I watched the first 2 minutes. Definitely something I will try to make time for over the next few days. The kids and I love to watch Survivor Man, they will probably like this to.

Thanks for sharing!

Less and his family I believe bagan living off the grid before survivorman and continue to do so...When he and his wife graduated college they supposedly went to live for a year in the canadian bush with nothing...making stone tools and such...I havn't delved anyfurther into this but I believe he created a documentary on this called snowshoes and solitude.

I looked on line and you can get into a 1Kw (not sure if that is enough power) wind turbine with the tower, battery charger and inverter (but no batteries) for around $12k. A 10Kw unit is around $35k

I would like to give it a whirl but I mean if we all did it we would have a freaking neighborhood block without utilities . LOL ...I think the video is a year or two old due to my modern Dish network OLN has been VS. channel for a year or two...

I have as friends a young couple who are pretty wealthy. They just built a home here in Maine that is off the grid. The house is loacated some distance from the nearest power pole, weighing the cost of running power to the building site versus going to alternative energy made it worth it. They don't lack for anything in terms of modern conveniences.

Thanks for posting this CanDo, this is exactly what my family and I are working towards, we're planning on building a completely self sufficient log home on the Navajo Reservation within the next few years. This video is a good taste of what we have to look forward to.

I really enjoyed that video. I think it does a good job of illustrating the off-the-grid mantra of 'work in = work out'. We sorta lose sight of that in an urban lifestyle.

The video is a bit dated now because they did it quite a while ago (yup, before his tv show). There are a lot of technological improvements that make it easier and cheaper to do it now. There are also many 'greener' building products available if that's important to you.

I going to start a new thread because I started with some of my 'off the grid' thoughts and it got really long...and I didn't want to hijack this thread with it.:D
