OK, so we all know that there are a gazillion PM2 copies out there and we all have to be careful to only buy from authorized, reputable dealers so we get an original.
What about the Spydercos that are lower on the food chain? I never hear about a Tenacious clone, or clones of the Byrd knives.
Are these safer to buy from places like the big river, and mega-auction sites? Or have the Chinese even gone about cloning the legit Spydercos that actually would be made in China.

I don't think there is a manix 2 xl clone. I was worried I got a fake at first, and that was the general concensus.

I have seen tenacious clones. Not Byrd though

Damn. Is nothing sacred? I can't imagine how it would even pay to bother! It's like there's some guy in China who's just trying to screw with Sal's head.

Given that there are knock off electronics that just walk out the door of the big name factory with some other label on it, anything is possible. For all anyone knows its one guy working overtime making fakes out of soup cans.

Hey!!! Don't laugh!!! Some soup cans are s30v!!!!

If they'll clone an Ontario Rat, I don't put it past them to clone a Byrd. It all depends on how popular they perceive the knife to be.

I might be wrong but I can't recall ever seeing a cloned Native?

I'm thinking about making a pilgrimage to the mothership this summer-----pretty sure there are no clones there

Drove by it last summer by pure chance---wrong turn off the interstate----but it was too late in the day to stop plus was trying to make good time to Phoenix----the Coors brewery was also on the same road---thinking about stopping there too.

At this point I assume every knife available through the big river and epray are fakes. It might seem cynical to think this way, but I've not been ripped off yet.

I will admit that one knife I want (not a Spyderco) is mostly only available through epray. I just look at it and ask myself, "what's wrong with it that they're not disclosing?"

I thought the big river site was fairly safe to order from...ive ordered probably 6 spyderco's from there and all are real from what I can tell. Latest was the gayle bradley 2 my gf just got me for my bday. But ive ordered a tenacious, 2 native lw's, manix lw and a pm2.

As long as you know what your protections are, either through paypal, or through your credit card, or big river itself, then the worst you are out is the time. Its a big deal for them, Amazon handles fulfillment for a lot of little business, but ultimately they get the credibility hit if the product is fake, and they want you to buy everything from them. Yes right now it seems like knives get a pass, but these same counterfeiters are trying to push into much bigger markets. So the controls are going to get tighter. Electronics are one of the worst, since bad electronics can kill people.

This Spyderco counterfeiting issue truly does worry me a bit :( Which is another reason that there are certain countries that I don't buy anything from. I truly believe that any vendor or private individual who is caught selling or trading counterfeit knives of any major brand and not just Spyderco's should get hammered by the legal system. Because to me stealing intellectual property and/or copying someone else's patents or ideas goes against what this great country stands for.

"LET THE BUYER BEWARE"!! really applies in this day and age especially at this time. If you get an offer for a top notch Spyder or Benchmade or Boker or Al Mar or any great manufacturer of fine cutlery and the price seems too good to be true>> then you are a complete fool if you take the bait IMO.

Don't ever forget "That You Get What You Pay For">> At this time there are only 3 dealers ( not including Spyderco themselves) that I will do business with. I no longer buy knives at Gun Shows or any other trade shows for that matter. The last Gun Show I was at a guy was selling fake Oakley Sunglasses at a ridiculously low price>> and sad to say he was selling a lot of them too :( The stupidity of the American consumer never ceases to amaze me  Everybody wants a bargain!! But at what costs? :(

Has anyone had any bad luck buying knives from Amazon? I have only ordered three knives from there, but they seem legit as far as I can tell.

hmmm, some of my spyderco Tasmans are from ebay, but US sellers, should I be worried

I go with the 'know thine enemy' approach and look at the websites that tout these shoddy items.

I'd look for the older, less well known models if I wasn't buying new from a reputable dealer
