Less hyped or noticeable knife characteristics which are important to you

• I like some serious negative blade angle like the Vosteed Nightshade knives have.
• Axis bar locks are a definite LIKE.
• Lots of crazy texture like the Siren G10 even on a small knife combined with a fairly neutral handle.
• Blocky handle but not wide ; think Case Trapper with the Spay blade removed.

And this last year I put gun handle grip tape ? sheet film ? on two trappers and a CIVIVI Damascus Appalachian Drifter II Folding Knife.

all are 👌😎

• trying to approximate those crazy textured rubber handles on so many of the Cold Steel fixed blades e.g. ; Pendleton Hunter, Mini Hunter , SRK etc.

Sure some of those thicker rubber coated folders wind up in a belt pouch BUT I LOVE USING THEM !

I haven't read through the rest of the thread yet, however I wanted to make you aware of Lee Williams Kickstop Mechanism if you didn't already know about it. It provides a good flipper mechanism for opening and then disappears into the handle when open. It's a killer design. It's absolutely fantastic on this old Kershaw OD-1. Super smooth and awesome! I also have a Wingman with the Kickstop in a Mayo Dr. Death design and it's not nearly as smooth on this one. They overengineered it it seems and it's not quite where I'd like it to be, however definitely still cool as hell! Mayo uses it on some of his Dr. Death models.

Interesting, I didn’t know this. I guess the main idea is to provide flipper functionality but without that nub of steel sticking out in the open position?

Yup, that's the biggest thing for me too, getting rid of that flipper bar when opened. They always seem to be cramping my hands or put where I want to put my pointer finger. Yeah that's probably true that it's still under patent. Still, more companies should use it and pay the royalties or what have you if that's the case. XM-18, Arius', some CRK creation, all sounds good to me. 👌
I like the flipper bar providing a small layer of security in case the lock fails.

I have three negatives for pocket knives
1 - No proud tips
2 - No proud tips
3 - synthetic materi…screw it No proud tips!

One thing I do love is when something e.g. blade, bolster or shield is stamped not etched.

For fixed blades

I hate a sloppy sheath where the knife lifts, shifts and moves all over the place.

What I love about a fixed blades knife is the same as what I love about a good gun - it has to be well balanced. My CPK EDC is a delight to hold.

Mmmm.....well I just looked in the recycle bin after second guessing myself. The lids in there are too thin. Actual can material though could work. Will take a bit of bending, grinding and sanding, but should be doable.

Snangle Tooth works great and looks good and its cheap. Black or silver. Good on several Cold Steel knives.

I hear ya on that. A lot of people really like to have some sort of guard as a selling point in looking for a knife. I think I used to be more interested in having a guard before the blade as well, but somewhere along the road the desire fell off. I haven't ended up cutting myself yet from my finger running up on the blade while cutting that I can remember, if I do get cut, I always seem to get it while closing the knife now that I think about it. Or maybe cleaning the blade a bit absent mindedly. But, at the end of the day, wanting a guard is just one of those things that some people want and others don't. Just like some people like lots of jimping and a real aggressive texture on the scales. For my uses I've found that I generally like knives to be smooth (for the pockets), and to have access as close to the heel of the blade as possible.

The Wingman MDD Kickstop solves that issue by having Tom Mayo's signature handle shape that swells out like a guard. Shirogorov on the other hand shaped the flipper tab so that it almost disappears in the handle.

One of the reasons I like flippers Is because of the “gaurd” when deployed. Some knives don’t need it like the PM2, because of aggressive texturing or just good ergos. But some knives feel a little awkward without anything there.

I've always liked the Mora companion rubber handles. Grippy and a 1000% nicer when the temps are below freezing. Cold metal just sucks the heat out of your hand. I'm sure a lot of people aren't using their knives outside in conditions like that, but if you ever do it's something to think about.

For me, a liner-lock that could function as a frame-lock without the scales, in other words, a robust lock on a knife with scales on both the show and lock sides. A perfect example of this is my years-old Shirogorov F3R

I like a larger guard. At least on the bottom of the hand, behind the edge. I have some permanent nerve damage from my hand slipping forward on my BK16 and slicing my finger nearly to the bone. I like how the guard on the BM Anonimous and the Spartan Difensa are (the Pacific is even better). Or something that will keep my hand from going forward if the knife is used in an odd way. I can use a tight lanyard but then I'm pretty much stuck to holding in a hammer grip.

Regular-carry clips, or at least the compatibility to switch it if it comes deep carry. It seems like since so many reviewers love deep-carry that knife companies started assuming we all do. I completely understand why some people prefer them, and I am willing to look past it when executed well or it fits the design well (the Adamas comes to mind), but people seeing my knife in my pocket is just not a problem I ever needed addressed. Quick access is much more important for me.

Plus, how else are people supposed to tell that my knife matches my watch 🤪
