Let’s talk about S35VN

I just picked up a like new never sharpened large Inkosi with S35vn steel two weeks ago. This is not my first CRK in S35vn. I have used it to cut tape and open boxes and mail. I just noticed that it has two pretty significant chips in the blade that definitely were not there when I received the knife. I am confident that the chips will sharpen out with out an issue. I am just really surprised that the blade chipped like that after the light cutting I have used it for.

I am not sure if this is even a possibility, but I am wondering if the apex of the blade could have gotten overly hot when it got sharpened at the factory and the temper of the steel was affected?

Either way I still really like the knife and am pretty confident that a good sharpening will fix it right up.

Perhaps it had a larger burr from the factory sharpening. Do you have pictures? My large Inkosi is not the best in terms of factory sharpening. The 1st third of the blade is >20dps angle so my SharpMaker won't even touch the apex. I've been using it and touching up on a loaded stop until I have time to do a reprofile to 18dps on my WickedEdge. From there I'll do my typical routine of touching up at 20dps as a small micro-bevel.

I'd pay $100 more for Vanax. S35VN is fine for a "21", but not a "31" and S45VN isn't good enough either. I expect at least M390 for the price they're charging. Check out the Quiet Carry Waypoint. Bigger than the small Sebenza, titanium scales, Vanax blade. $295. So it can (and should) be done. C'mon Chris.

I am more and more convinced CPK factory edges DO get better after 2 or 3 really good sharpenings. I have had several that were prone to chipping brand new out of the box that just seemed to be fine after being completely resharpened. Purely anecdotal, but I think you could be right.

I've owned 10+ CRKs and have reprofiled everyone that I really use. The factory grind really can be improved so the steel performs as it should.

So I did sharpen the chips out of the Inkosi and have been using the knife. There has been no other issues with the blade so far.
