Let’s talk about your Buck 124

Haebbie, it could have been near 89 or 90 that the change was made to a birch laminate. I have 124 w/ the laminate wood handles and it is a /
mark, 1993. Thus, I wonder about when the change occurred. I'll keep looking on this. DM

My 124 story?

I had just bought a new pair of Nocona boots, I went for a walk in the desert. I accidentally stepped on a rattler and had to use my 124 to chop the snakes head off.

Okay, okay, don't twist my arm any more.:D I love telling this story about my 'find'. A few years ago I was wanting a 124 for a user. I searched and searched. I was frequenting gun shows at the time and there were a few vendors that had a good selection of knives so I would look and ask each for a 124. I finally ask and was shown two. One was in nice shape but way over priced. The other was in my price range but had been painted all black. The vendor had taken off the paint around the tang stamp so, I knew I wanted the knife when I saw that it was a two liner. He knew what he had and would not budge off his price. I paid and took my prize home.

I stripped some of the paint off and found that, in order to get the paint to stick on the knife the PO had used sand paper, on every part of the knife. I decided then that this work was above my pay grade and sent the knife to Leroy Remer. Here are a few photos of the knife...

Several years later I did find my user 124 for a decent price...

Great story. The knife turned out great. I always had respect for Buck knives on how they make so many blades that can be re-polished.

David, if I trust the records the change from Micarta to laminated birch took place in April 1981.

I'm good with that. Don't sweat the details. My data sheets were from the 2008--20 year reunion. There is an article on this model in a newsletter I think Joe wrote. DM

This 2012 mfg Buck 124 has Micarta scales and was my 30th Anniversary gift from my company in 2013. (Yes, I got to pick what I wanted!). The wood laminate handle fits my hand better, slightly rounded and slightly smaller in circumference - just enough that I can feel the difference. OH
