Let 'em rest in peace (old brand names)

I partially agree, the reissuing of brands is a sad state of affairs sometimes. Many never live up to the standard of their forefathers.

But, every once and awhile, a company comes along, and does the old-timers proud. I'm thinking of Schatt & Morgan, Winchester, Robeson, Case Classic's, Camillus/O.V.B., and the Marble's of a few years back.

I only wish certain folk's would definatively mark their knives as repro's. This would save a infinate number of headaches for new collectors.

Also, while I hate defending Frost, H & R is still a fine brand(although not quite up to old standards). Frost has'nt found a way to screw them up too badly....yet:).

:D:).

I hear ya.I found some Shapleigh knives on ebay - labelled as a warehouse find from the 50s and 60s. Not being too knowledgable on the older names I posted here, basically asking is it a good deal. In not so many words every reply told me to run like hell.
If they are good quality knives like the Case Classics and the Queen Marbles folders I am OK with and it is made clear it is a repro. Its when they try and pass them off as the originals I get annoyed.
I agree about H&R, Bob, still a decent brand, not what it was but I would still choose it over some other brands.

Was in the antiques trade for a while, the curse of the repro, reissue, outright fakes, whatever, signifies to me that the hobbie/passion for knives has 'arrived'. For better or for worse this means that the situation will only get worse from here on in. If there is a fast dollar to be made by defiling the name of a once honourable maker with a quickie ripoff version its gonna happen.:(

I do agree with Bob Bowie as far as a couple of those names he mentions.
yobbos1.. I couldn't agree more!
