The 2nd amendment has been upheld by the US Supreme Court, thus striking down draconian gun laws in DC and other places.

It turns out that 5 out of 9 justices agree that "shall not be infringed" means exactly that. The 4 dissenting justices apparently cannot read. ;)

There may be some hope for you California guys...

Thank GOD our freedom has been preserved!

That's a HUGE decision -- I was hoping it would fall that way. I don't like much about the current administration, but I do like a conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

I know the was a case dealing with D.C., but maybe Chicago will be the next to fall in line

This is GREAT News! 5 of 9 is still pretty close, but We are good for now though :D

!!!OUTFREAKINGSTANDING!!!

God Bless America!

I was so excited when I heard this today. It is good to know that we win a few every now and then.

A good way to celebrate is to buy a new gun. Any gun.

Wait, I just did! :D

Actually, they said a complete ban on handguns wouldn't pass muster. They left the door open for a whole lot of other infringement, though. Still, about as good an opinion as one could reasonably hope for.

Thank God indeed - what a blessing! Here are 2 quotes from an AP article on yahoo.com: "The court had not conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since its ratification in 1791." "Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said that an individual right to bear arms is supported by "the historical narrative" both before and after the Second Amendment was adopted."

This ruling is HUGE - affirming it IS an individual right!

I was in a virtual meeting today but couldn't pay attention at all since I had the SCOTUS Live Blog running on my second screen to see the decision in real time. Overall I think it was the best opinion we could have hoped for give the context of the case. The opinion is really interesting to read and has some very clear statemements such as:

"The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a
firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for
traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home."

Of course, there is enough vagueness in the opinion to allow for tons of future court cases on the details but for now I am pleased.

I am pleased with this, I do agree its vague but I figured it would be for future interpretation.

I am pretty psyched about this! Although the opinion is very clear that the 2nd amendment does allow for restrictions on gun ownership. I expect the ruling will encourage all sorts of new anti-gun legislation, that tries to see how hard the line can be pushed.

No right under the Constitution is considered absolute, all are subject to a degree of regulation. Scalia equated the 2nd with the 1st in his ruling, which is to say any regulation will be subject to strict scrutiny. This was the best possible outcome we could have reasonably expected period. Pie in the sky could have us wishing for more, but remember this ruling would not have happened without Kennedy on board, and I'm rather surprised he signed onto such an expansive ruling.

It is GREAT news!

But look at the early to mid 90's, if a certain party takes majority control I'm afraid we could see those day's again.

But for now...WhoooHoooo!!!

ps- and please support the NRA

I agree with everyone here. In fact, it's the best news I've heard out of the Supremes in as long as I can remember.:thumbup::thumbup:
