Sorry about the pun, I couldn't help it. I rode the short bus. :D

I just got the new Wetterlings axe a week ago and want to do some work on the handle. I keep seeing posts and info about linseed oil . I have a whole can of Danish oil, would that work? I use it for wood knife handles and put on many coats. Would the same work for the axe handle or should I go out and get linseed oil? Thanks Guys. Steve

Linseed and Tung Oil are usually recommended. I'm not too familiar with Danish, but if you think it would work, it probably will.

danish oil should work fine for you.

its basically linseed oil mixed with some other stuff. the only real difference i have found is that linseed oil gives the wood a more golden tone, whereas the danish oil leaves more of the natural color (but still gives it a little bit of the gold tint).

Danish oil is thinned down with some solvents and drying agents, plus some dyes. It will work but will need to be reapplied more often.

Danish oil is also mixed with phenolic resins - ala varnish. Different brands have different mixes, but they are essentially the same thing. You "might" have to apply it more often, like Mike said, but really Danish oil is more of a wipe-on varnish than anything else, so it'll see alot of hand-use before you'll feel the need to refinish it. The oil will carry the resin hardeners into the wood instead of drying on the surface - same as boiled linseed. If you've got Watco, follow the instructions - load it, let it sit and soak for 15 minutes or so, reapplying in any areas that dhow drying, then wipe off the excess. The next day, SCRUB it all off (ALL of it) with 00 or 000 steel wool, and repeat. Keep doing that until you're happy. It ought to be fine if you use what you have on-hand.

set up a dip trough , using some wood and a heavy plastic sheet to form the trough. sand the ax haft and soak in the oil for several days, then wipe the excess off and let it sit over night, then buff with a little fresh oil and 00 steel wool.

You will like the results!
